iPhone 15 Pro - 512GB Plan Question

Hey everyone, I just signed up to a deal at Harvey Norman for the iPhone 15 Pro 512gb with Optus.

I just want some clarity.

They had a $1200 gift card promo which got deducted from the value of the phone ($2399)

I then had to sign up to their $99 - 24 month plan.

What I'm confused about is that now there's the other half $1498 on the phone remaining, but then if you include the $99x24 this equals $2376 + (the already paid $1498) which is $3874…which is not worth it as retail is $2399.

Am I missing something?

Thank you.

This is phone + plan. What's so hard to understand?
Phone only is $2k (for example) and $2k for plan over 24 months.

Should really be asking for clarity before you sign up to anything but let's break it down…

iPhone 15 Pro 512 GB is $2,399. This is for the phone only.
$99 Optus plan for 24 months is $2,376. This is for the plan only.
    Total cost (phone + plans) is $2,399 + $2,376 = $4,775.

HN gave you $1200 gift card promo which I understand you were able to use straight away. So you paid $2,399 - $1,200 = $1,199 balance for the phone and will continue paying $99/month for next 2 years.

    • Thanks for the clarity. Can I just wait to receive the phone and pay the termination fee?

You can indeed. Read the T&Cs you signed up to which will advise you what the termination fee is (and hence what the minimum cost is). Usually quite hefty that it's not worthwhile though…

To look at it in another way, you basically paid for the phone outright and now have an effective $49/month plan.

      • See contract and how much is exit fee.

      • Termination Fee = 1/2 of the contract fee. If you cancel on Day 1, you will have to pay about $1200 termination fee. I don't see why you want you to do that as you basically paid for the phone $1199 (cost of the phone) + $1200 termination fees = ~ $2400 :( But you get hit with a Credit Check.

        • You get hit with a credit check if you terminate a contract early? Not that I'm aware of, please correct me otherwise

@jnathanc: You already got hit with the credit check when you signed up to a postpaid contract. Plus all this work for basically zero gain. Worth.

  • These kind of plans used to be poor value because phone and data offers usually get cheaper with time. But recently they have been going up in price, so if you're locked into an effectively good deal for two years then it might be a good thing. If you have 5G and enough data that you actually use, then you could be saving money. If you would have been fine with a much cheaper offer then you are paying for data you won't be using. Maybe start tethering to other devices to use it?

  • You're better off going with a provider like Amaysim which also has access to the full Optus network.

    Optus: $1199 (for iPhone after $1200 discount) + $2376 ($99/m phone plan) = $3575
    Amaysim: $2399 (for iPhone) + $720 ($30/m SIM only plan) = $3119

The only reasons why it would make sense to go on a plan like this is if you cannot afford to buy the phone outright and actually need this much data.

  • I'm going to terminate once I receive the phone, cheaper. This way I can pay for their freedom subscription when I pickup and get a free upgrade next year.

    Thank you

So you want to pay $1188 for the plan and $1199 for the iPhone which equates to $2387? Saving a grand total of $12. Makes sense.

    • But you dont save any money as you have to pay the termination fee as soon as you cancel the plan. Then you said you want to get back onto their SIM only plan, that will be another credit check. But as you said, you are kinda locked in now.

Look on the bright side, at least you are still $12 ahead than buying the phone outright.

    • Freedom subscription (https://www.harveynorman.com.au/customer-service/mobile-freeā€¦) is $299 for your iPhone and then a $299 if you want to swap within a year. WHAT IF next year iPhone was delayed and it won't shipped until late October….you will be $299 out of pocket with no upgrade.

Look at the terms and conditions: "Subject to market availability. Your rights to mobile freedom services will terminate when you upgrade to the next generation model."

  • I'm already locked in, I don't think there's another choice. Unless you know a way

    • Well, we've established that you can afford to purchase the phone outright so I suppose if you don't need a $99/m plan, you may as well leave. The only real benefit now is that you don't have to fork out $2387 and can pay it off over the course of 24 months. More money in your pocket.

    • You made that decision when you signed the dotted line. What did you think would happen?

Mobile phone plans keep Major phone companies in business, as well as JB, HN, DM etc

Best value is a phone at edu discount from ******** then use Amaysim or Aldi.
