Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection for Car with Factory Warranty

Hi,

Im just wondering if its worth getting a used car pre-purchase inspection when purchasing a car from a dealership, if there is specifically factory warranty still existing on the vehicle, 3 years left, would you bother? or does it depend on the age/kms.

If it has valid factory warranty and hasn't been in an accident I wouldn't bother

If i do a PPSR, wouldnt it just show finance if the dealer has it on their floor stock!? and dealerships are legally obliged to disclose write offs.

  • What sorta car?
    Is it stock or modified?

There could be some really dodgey repairs on the body of the vehicle (after a major collision) that wouldn't be covered by factory warranty. Modifications or unauthorised repairs, especially to major engine components, could've voided factory warranty too. That's just to name a couple of things - there are other things that are not covered by factory warranty.

It's not to say that a pre-purchase inspection will find everything wrong with it. It's about having experienced eyes/ears over it to maximise the chances of finding potential problems.

    • But then it would show up on the Wovi register which would be a dead giveaway

No, vehicles are only listed on their if the insurance company deems them to be a write off, and then gets rid of the vehicle. Could have had poor repairs through insurance, or no insurance and garbage repairs.

  • Yes, even with warranty it'll be a pain in the butt to get yourself a lemon. Could be dodgy stuff, unreported accident repairs, who knows? Get a check done, the $150 or whatever is well worth it mate

Are we talking major dealership or dodgy joe’s car yard?

I wouldn’t bother from a major dealer with a remaining new car warranty. But I don’t bother with private sales either - but I do crawl around underneath and have a good look around and decent test drive.

    • Na like a proper dealership where the brand there selling matches the brand of the used car, i.e Honda, Ford, VW, Nissan etc. Car is 1.5 years old.

You’ve got statutory warranty plus new car warranty. If anything goes wrong, they need to fix it. Plus, major dealerships don’t sell heavily crashed vehicles, they ship them off to their dodgy dealer sideshow.

  • If you can afford it do. A good mech might pick up something now, before it becomes a post warranty nightmare. Dealer is likely to tell you your of any issues if they know them or not. They are there to take your money

If you can afford it do

If you can't afford an inspection, you can't afford a car.

    I wouldn't trust any dealer.

  • Manufacturer's warranty covers faults and defects that are attributable to your vehicle's production. So it comes down to cosmetic defects that are attributable to the previous owner. If you can't identify any yourself then they likely don't matter. Per @Euphemistic, dealerships only trade in high quality (= high margin) used vehicles, everything else goes to wholesale.

Yes get an inspection, should pick up on little bits and pieces that you may miss, that you could use for bargaining. Can also find previous damage, poor repairs, etc.

  • yes.
then you can claim on broken things immediately
