Career Change Income Advice

Hi OZB

I quit my corporate job earlier this year (burnout) to go back to Uni and enact a career change. Uni will start in Feb / March this year and in the meantime just looking for ideas for what types of alternate jobs could suit someone with HR/corporate experience to help pay the bills in the interim.

I've tried looking at contract roles in my area of specialty (and will continue to do so) but if unsuccessful, I'm wondering if there are any other types of jobs that could help bridge the gap on a temporary basis. I am thinking woolies, bottleshops etc. but is there anything else I haven't thought about? Has anyone had/known anyone who has been in a similar position?

Cheers all.

Christmas retail will be ramping up shortly, there's that option but you might want to kill yourself. Exam marking tends to be pretty good per hour pay as well and will be kicking off soon. There's always casual event stuff too, if there's any big events in Sydney coming up look at who is doing the hiring. Training jobs might be available if you have the suitable skillset and are usually short term as well (maybe no so much over xmas). If you don't mind talking on phones, you'd probably smash call centre work.

I work in recruiting (not a recruiter) but staffing agencies are basically short on everything thanks to the current unemployment rate. Give a few a call, get in touch with someone in the white collar team and see what they can do.

    • Do you have an example name of a staffing agency, I'm not familiar with them.

Hays, Hudson, Mayday. You can also select “contract/temp” as an option on Seek.

You know it's October, right? Hope you proofread your assessments before submitting

  • Go Government, you'll get the opposite of burnout, surrounded by inept people that'll make even the dumbest person feel like a genius.
It's so clunky you might even be able to study while working your job.

But you need to throttle your brain. At some point you end up like them. Mushy brained.

        100%
The career government workers are the drain and everyone stoops to their work ethic.

For those that started in private (me) and did my time before getting headhunted into government it's the best of both worlds. I was at the stage where i had a wage ceiling holding me back due to lack of experience in private and was effectively waiting for someone to die. Government was more than happy to give me a 60% payrise instantly when i asked for it with the added bonus of less stress. Luckily the rest of the team are ex private consultants so we all work at a higher pace.

Yes its a drain, but if you play the game you can be rewarded

        • Yes once I'm old enough that is the plan. Not ready to mush the brain just yet!

See if you can find a part time uni admin job. Corporate experience will help and you could negotiate around your study.

    • Good idea cheers

Get a remote job. There is groups on linkedin about 100% remote roles

Have to be careful, sometimes you're just the crash test dummy to see if that role can be successfully done offshore.

    • can you help with the group name, if posisble? there are many such groups but hardly worth joining

    Uber? Doordash? Didi? Amazon Flex?
