Hard to get a read on how good this price is as this version is/was supposed to be a Target (US) exclusive. I can't really find any prices to compare with other than the camels. They think the cheapest price for this is $56.80. I thought I did a post about this game in the past but I can't seen to find anything in OzBargain's history. I swear I read and wrote about this Target version once before.

From what I can gather the Viking Edition is the same as the original version except there are no metal coins and the tokens are made out of cardboard. With that in mind, I don't think the pictures show the right items that you will get in the game. Original version is rated 7.7 at BGG.

If you don't mind the cheaper components, this is probably going to be the cheapest way you will get to play this game. BGO has the all time low at around $50 for the original version. Hope this helps someone!

Original Game Page @ BGG

Raiders of the North Sea is set in the central years of the Viking Age. As Viking warriors, players seek to impress the Chieftain by raiding unsuspecting settlements. To do so, players need to assemble a crew, collect provisions, and journey north to plunder gold, iron and livestock. Glory can be found in battle, even at the hands of the Valkyrie, so gather your warriors because it's raiding season!

To impress the Chieftain, you need victory points (VPs), with those being acquired primarily by raiding settlements, taking plunder, and making offerings to the Chieftain. How you use your plunder is also vital to your success. Players take turns in clockwise order, and on a turn you place a worker and resolve its action, then pick up a different worker and resolve its action. Broadly speaking, those actions fall in one of two categories:

  • Work: Having a good crew and enough provisions are vital to successful raiding, so before making any raids, players need to do some work to prepare their crew and collect supplies. This is all done in the village at the bottom of the game board, with eight buildings offering various actions. You must first place your worker in an available building where no other worker is present, then pick up a different worker from a different building.
  • Raid: Once players have hired enough crew and collected provisions, you may choose to raid on your turn. To raid a settlement — whether a harbor, outpost, monastery or fortress — you need to meet three requirements: Having a large enough crew, having enough provisions (along with gold for monasteries and fortresses, and having a worker of the right color. Raiding offers various ways of scoring, such as military strength, plunder, and Valkyries, which is how grey and white workers enter the game.

The game ends when only one fortress raid remains, all Valkyrie have been removed, or all offerings have been made, then players tally their scores.

Hey all -

A few clarifications on this:

  • MSRP for the Viking Edition is $40, compared to the $60 of the standard edition.
  • Gameplay is 100% the same
  • Changed from wood to punchboard: plunder tokens, score markers, valkyrie
  • Changed from metal to punchboard: coins
  • Compatible with BOTH expansions — we included the Jarl tokens from Fields of Fame in this edition as punchboard tokens to make this possible
  • Still wood: all of the viking meeples
  • Box size - Slightly larger than original

Regarding the plunder tokens, they are using the same iconography that already exists in the game, and they are 20 x 20 mm. Four of them fit into a standard raiding location without overlap.

We're excited to expose this great game to more people through this placement at Target! Of course, the standard version will still be available through FLGS, along with the expansions, collector's box, etc.

Unlike all those times you thought you were raping and pillaging your way through the Norse countries…

That's a different game. Maybe I was reading about this one while I was posting about that one.

      • Forgiveness, please.

        Great write up regardless. Thanks…

Awesome deal. Thank you so much! Been on my wishlist for a long time, looking for a bargain ($50) on the regular edition - so instant buy at this price. (I would never have found it myself as it doesn't show up in "raiders north sea" results. In fact, it still doesn't come up if you include "Viking"; it only appeared when I included "Viking edition.")

    • Glad to help!

Sadly I won't be picking this up. Not much use sitting on the shelf for 10 years or so. Hopefully by then I'll know a fellow Viking and be able to get another good deal on this or the original.

  • Cheers, grabbed one

  • Great deal! Board game is highly rated by all

  • Still available

    • Thanks.
