Mens Glasses Post Cateract Operation

Hi Team, have just recently had a cateract operation on one eye, so far all good!. I have been told to wait 6 weeks have a new eye test in order to have new glasses made.

I have many frames - reading, distance, progressive, and prescription sun glasses. It would be appreciated if there is some advice on the best and economical way to replace around 6 different types. Do I try a bulk order with my local Eyes & Vision, order online like Clearly or as a friend has suggested to take the frames to an dedicated Optician and have the one lens changed as he suggests he has done?. I was surprised how well the cateract / lens replacement went so far, but right now I'm wearing a pair of glasses with one side ripped out which feeles rather odd but works!!.

Thanks for some informed suggestions, I am in a optical mess right now.

  • Get clip-on non-prescription sunglasses. You'll save hundreds there. Photochromic lenses are expensive, as is an extra pair. If you're set on getting prescription sunglasses, consider only getting for distance.

Get multiple quotes from competing stores and definitely be bold in asking for discounts. I got 35% off on some Pewter coloured Oakley Gauge 5.1's just for asking if they'll match the discount on other glasses they had in the store.

  • Visit your local lenspro, ask for their IC Berlin copycat models, and opt for the tokai lenses. It's more expensive than specsavers but the value is there.

Take this from someone who insists on their prescription and gets lenses done in Japan based on that. Optometrists hate me! and they refuse to give me my pupillary distance.

  • Hi bunnyburger, I assume Lenspro is a specialist in dispensing just the lenses, which is what i need but they seem to be centred in Queensland and I'm in Adelaide …. you have given me some thought to follow up on - Thanks.

  • Are you getting surgery on the other eye?

  • Hi Sam1966, thanks for your interest. My Opthalmologist seems to think my left eye is quite OK and at this stage thinks IF it needs a cateract operation is would be several years away, I hope that is the case. He is watching the pressures on it but who knows were it will end up??.

    Cheers Nick

    • That's great news - my parents both had them close together, so waited for new glasses until after the second surgery.

      • +1

Hi Sam, thanks for your interest, looks like I will follow the same path as your parents ……seems to be the sensible thing to do, and it will allow normal unaided distance viewing and a mild reader later of around +1. Seems a bit crazy to have two very different eyes - one old and one new!. Typing this with just 1 lens, as I removed the lens for the new side as with that remaining one I was going nuts optically!!. Cheers Nick

  • Pardon my ignorance but I thought one of the benefits of cataract surgery was removing/reducing the need for glasses.
Would you not need at least your distance glasses and prescription sunglasses?

  • You are correct, distance visionis good, but still need a light reader circa +1, problem "old eye" needs around+3 …. so just discussing having that one done to balance things up!.

      Ah.. got it now.
I read your post to mean that you still needed to replace all of your glasses as

some advice on the best and economical way to replace around 6 different types

I'm due to see an ophthalmologist next week to explore my options and had been assuming I would hopefully just need to replace my reading/computer glasses and not need anything for distance/sunglasses.

      • I think you will require around +1 but as for distance it so far appears to not need anything. The issue you will find is when you have a "new eye" but still have an old one ….. there is the problem with your original sets of glasses.

Still my Opthalmologist seems to agree that it would be best to have 2 new eyes, and it looks like I will do that in the next three months, and only need the +1 glass solution.

My non expert view is get it ALL over and done and then that should prevent more deteriation, once its gone it's gone and my chap is keen to not see the situation arrive at a white cane !! for me! Cheers and good luck

That should make my photo sessions a bit interesting for a while - I guess I could use the time between ops to catch up on some post processing the better ones and pruning my average shots.

  • There is a bit of colour shift in the eye vision, my new eye is colder than the other original one. I raised this with the Opthalmologist, and it can be a factor with painters or in my case as a retired pro-photographer! Enjoy your editing.

Should be fun - at least for a while until I adjust - I paint (poorly) and nowhere near pro with the camera.

  • Enjoy your journey to restored vision, I think it's worth it!!
