Cancelling a $50 Order with Free Shipping - Non-Prime Member

I’ve placed one order with 2 items on Amazon, totalling $50, and received free shipping as a non-Prime member. One of the items in my order is temporarily out of stock and does not have a delivery date. If I decide to cancel this item and the total of my order drops below $39, I am wondering if I still qualify for free shipping.

    Wait until Item #1 ships.
    Then cancel Item 2.

    • step 1a - change payment method to one with $1 on it?
      .

    • I fear that they would deduct shipping before refunding the second item.

Tried it once by mistake. I cancelled (too early?) and got charged for shipping. Haven't tried cancelling after the first one shipped, though.

I tried doing this and I got charged for shipping. So, avoid this at all costs. I also tried contacting CS to cancel the whole order, but they were not able to do it
