I thought this instant company was in bankruptcy

    • +2

Parent company and I think it was chapter 11, so likely reorganised or (parted out) sold off.

      • +1

Doesn't matter either way since the point of sale is responsible for refunds or replacement.

  • It is at a low price historically but it was $149 for only a brief period

  • Better than mistral?

    • 100% this is similar quality to Phillips, at least in the larger version

    • I got it in March, very good quality.

  • This or the philips one?

    • Phillips $367 on Prime Day a few days ago but this is a very decent deal, if not send it back.

    • Philips 3000 Series Essential Air Fryer L Compact HD9200/21

$89 on Prime day. Compare manual control to manual control

  • Seems quite small? Not familiar with air fryers but cannot even do 1 bag of hot chips? 700-1000g, capacity 680g

    • not sure where you see 680g capacity? amazon says 4l capacity and says 1.1kg of chicken or 4 portions of fries

      • It says in the images of the item if you scroll through the listing
“Fits 680g of French fries or 1.1kg chicken”

        • ah i see, 700g of chips is still a large amount though

    • +1

How many chips do you eat in one sitting?

      • I have 6 people to feed so usually a 1kg bag of frozen chips

        • +5

This may not be for you then. I suspect most people don’t do 1 kg of frozen chips in one sitting. This isn’t a replacement for the Philips XXL. Then it doesn’t come with that price tag either.

    • I recently bought the 5.7L one and feel even that is just large enough. Couldn't imagine a 4L one

      • It depends what you use it for. We had the Mistral one and it is good if you just want a couple of pieces of fish or some chips for a couple. This really suits people who pull it out to use occasionally as a snack. If you are serious you get something bigger and more expensive.

  • bought my fist air fryer ..that price is good and migkt ne good for saving electricity

    • Do you use it for pig knuckles? Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Air Fryer is a smart gimmick term for bench top oven.

There is nothing special about an air fryer that isn't done by a normal kitchen oven. It's just a small oven for smaller portion sizes. It doesn't "fry" anything.

Just be aware of that before jumping in and purchasing one of these. I almost got fooled and almost bought one recently. "Air Frying" = Fan Forced Oven. Nothing more.

    • +6

I think most people realise this. It isn’t the same as a deep fryer. However, the result is pretty good and it does use less power.

I'm not sure that 'most people' do mate… its the biggest myth on these things. I don't consider myself silly, but both the Mrs and I were seriously considering purchasing one of these recently, thinking it was a healthy way to fry stuff. It isn't, it's just an oven- no special technology in the "air frying" department. And it uses less power if you want smaller portions (as clearly it has much less capacity to heat than a normal oven)… but not if you're going to cook multiple batches of the same thing to cater to a family.

Great source of info here for those curious: https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/kitchen/benchtop-c…

Well, maybe most people on this site do, given the number of postings there have been about air fryers. I use an air fryer because I don’t want to use up the energy to heat a full oven and I think the air fryer does make things crispier than a standard oven. It is around how the air is circulated.

We don’t do a lot of fried food so this sort of thing suits us for snacks etc. if you do want to test one out I would suggest getting a Philips one from somewhere like Costco that has a returns policy.

Cooking supermarket frozen chips is vastly different.

          Oven:
lay them all out even spaced on a non-stick tray (even this is time consuming)
cook and mid way through cooking spin each chip individually with tongs then return to the oven (even more time consuming)
Still comes out oily with some bits stuck to the tray.

          Air Fryer:
          Toss them in the basket
pull them out mid way for a about 5secs of shaking and return to fryer.
They come out crisp much like using a deep fryer

Pretty much anything that comes frozen and pre-fried from the super market has the same result.

Meat Pies are super quick too.
3mins in the microwave to heat it to the core. Then air fry for about the same time to crisp up the outside.

For specific use cases they beat ovens hands down. However large roasts and pizzas are far better suited for the oven.

I resisted few years thinking it was a gimmick until I bought this model. We use it way more often than we ever used the oven, which is filled with pots and trays anyway :D

Yes, you could heat up a snack in a microwave, or make a melted cheese sandwich in your oven, but it's way cheaper/easier to pop it in the air frier for 5 minutes. And the result? Golden crispy :)

      • +1

Yeah we have baking stuff stored in the oven too. It is annoying when you forget they are in there and have to deal with handling hot trays.

      • +1

I do open top cheese sandwiches in the airfryer.
        Ham , cheese and tomato.

    • +12

That's not exactly correct. Most decent "air fryers" use much higher velocity fans to drive heat into the food and within a smaller chamber, that higher velocity heated air cooks foods in a way a normal fan forced oven can't. Most standard fan forced ovens use the fan to spread heat not force it into foods. But agree, technically they bake not fry.

You sound like my great grandmother.

She was convinced that a stovetop was an unnecessary luxury that did nothing that couldn’t be achieved with a few logs and a kindling stick.

The fact that an air fryer can cook the same items as an oven in less than half the time may have escaped her too…

    • +1

      Yeah nah.
Chips (especially) and most other stuff come out way better in the air fryer than normal oven.
I was skeptical at first but the air fryer has been the most used appliance in our house for a couple of years now.
We only use the actual oven if whatever we're cooking won't fit in the air fryer.

  • So much non stick pfas 🤮

    Hey everyone
Any recommendations for something close to air fryer that can do Pizzas too?

Family loves pizza and chips as combo for dinner

    • +1

This thing from Kogan looks kind of exactly like what you're asking for. Never heard of it and can't see any reviews so buy at your discretion

There's also this Masterpro which I've heard good things of and I think sometimes goes down to ~$70 but is really a pizza only device

And another alternative I like is this Hizo pizza oven which is ideal for pizza but also talks about searing meat/vegetables. I imagine it may be able to do chips too but looks a bit fiddly

I don't have experience with any, I just remember them from a previous OzBargain thread where people talked positively about the Masterpro and Hizo. Happy hunting, hope you find what you're looking for

    • +2

Get something like the masterpro @SpainKing linked to. It might be an extra appliance over an air fryer but the results you get are so much better.
I usually describe mine as the best thing I've bought because it's really easy to make good pizza and the worst thing because it's really easy to make good pizza that I eat it a lot more now.

  • Any deals on the 5.7L version?

  • whats satndard capacties ofr air fryers?

    • +4

I wouldn’t let it bother you. Those fat thumbs will be a recipe for disaster…
      ;-)

  • What's the best air fryer to buy for bang for buck? Ideally I want a XXL 7.3L capacity for the air fryer so I can cook more at home.

  • Kitchen couture 12l in big w is only $138. Had it for 6 months and great bit of kit. Works perfectly.

    • I just had a look at the reviews for that air fryer and seems like most people are happy with that air fryer. Currently on this website it's $100 with about $13 shipping which is an excellent deal, and I recommend everyone buy it from here instead. Plus I recommend ticking that postage protection insurance for an extra $2.95 for 100 day return-free policy.

PS: If you subscribe to their newsletter on their website you can get $25 off but your purchase or total overall order value needs to be $200 or more I think.

If people have alternatives then please post them. I hope these posts act as a catalyst for people providing options and experiences,

  • Hi it appears as 79 on the website for me. Does anyone come across the same?

    • That appears to be the case. There is a prime15 code for a $15 discount. I didn’t put in a credit card to complete it but it might be worth a try. If that works give me a yell otherwise I will close this out. Thanks.
