L to P Licence - Victoria

Hi All,

I am new to Melbourne and got a L licence from Vicroads.
I am 34 and I believe I can get a P licence now without maintaining any logbook.
I don't have a overseas licence and never driven before.

Just wondering from where I should start learning to drive given I don't know anyone here.

I am happy to go for paid classes but they are very expensive and I am not sure if it is worth it for me at this stage. I will certainly take those before going for the car drive test, but before that is there any other way to learn basics and practice driving without spending much?

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

  • How are you able to get your P plates if you haven't done logbook and can't drive?

  • I have L, want to learn to get P.

  • You don't need the logbook hours in Vic if you're 34?

In any case, the lessons you get for the VORT, or the CBT sessions, can count towards your logbook hours if you do need those hours.

But even if you don't need those hours, you'll still want practice in a car to prepare for the VORT/CBT. If you're from overseas maybe there's an ethnic social club you could join, or a religious organisation, where maybe someone would be willing to help you get those hours and practice on the road? Would still be a big ask for a stranger.

I'd encourage you to do it any way you can though, get as much practice as you can while you're still relatively young. Would be easy to keep putting it off for years more in the age of Ubers and fully mapped in your phone apps public transport. If you have friends who drive and are willing to pay for your fuel and any extra insurance, maybe hit them up?

    What about M, N & O? lol

(Good Luck with the L to D). :+)

  • Probably too old for https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/your-ps/get-your-ps…

But ask them if they know of a similar scheme for 30+

  • Book a driving instructor so you can learn to drive. Some have individual lessons and some have packages (that are cheaper) to "guarantee" you pass the P driving test.

As usual, do your research (or get references/referrals) carefully before handing over any large sums of money to anyone.

How on earth is it not worth it? You want to get your licence, but you can't drive, so you need to learn. You don't have any friends/family to teach you, so what other options do you have?

OP, maybe I'm missing something here: can you tell us what kind of outcome you're expecting here? All of us who now drive had lessons at one time or another. That's the point: lessons help you learn to drive. So, I ask, what are you looking for?

    • Looks like they want to be given very cheap/free driving lessons (in a time where everything is expensive) and/or their P plates so they can drive around the place all on their own with zero prior experience.

  • You’re going to have to pay for lessons. Start with one lesson and ask the instructor to give you an honest assessment of how long they think you’ll need to be proficient enough to get your licence.

Please don’t take shortcuts, there’s enough bad drivers out there without adding no yourself as an inexperienced driver.

    • I definitely feel like there could be more people out there driving unlicensed these days. Probably unregistered and uninsured too.

Just watch sum utube vids, she be rite….
    No, don't do that
    .

    • I wasted thousands on lessons and still couldn't drive..

I spent half of day watching That Driving Test Guy NSW and passed my driving exam the next day.
