Free Sheep from The Farm

Farmers offloading sheep for free as drought looms

Some farmers are resorting to offering their sheep for free to whoever will take them, as livestock prices plummet ahead of a forecast dry summer they fear could strip paddocks bare.

      It's sheep not fox..

    • damn no pricematch at local officeworks because it's already free.

This isn't uncommon; it is cheaper for the farmer than it is to kill the sheep.
    Not many will get taken.

    • christmas sheep

        That is one option.
Load up the family for a day (or two) trip to where the sheep are located. Find a nice looking sheep or two, load into your car and get back home.
Feed and water the sheep until late December, find a butcher (unless you want to tackle this yourself) to slaughter and dress the sheep, and there you go, Christmas family lunch sorted.

  • No wonder lamb prices have dropped.

    HSP here we come

  • " a small group of farmers who were most affected had offered to offload sheep for free"
and there apparently is 79 million sheep in Aus, so 3 each?

no wonder so many kiwis are coming here.

  • Demand and supply.

Farmers crying poor when they've made a huge windfall over covid.

I quickly read the article and found no reference to farmers crying poor. The article is about how it's more economically viable for some farmers to give their sheep away rather than pay to send them to market. Merely future proofing their farms based on predicted weather events.

If I'm wrong please highlight the text that I missed.

Ok maybe not crying poor, but definitely lobbying hard for modifications to the live export rules to push back up the prices.

IMHO live exports need to be quashed.

          Genuinely, why?

@happydude: I get to look at the trucks dumping sheep/cows into the ships and it's pretty inhumane, let alone the ships turning into ovens once they hit the equator. Yes there were improvements after the one ship lost some 3,000 odd sheep in one voyage but it's still a highly stressful environment which isn't ideal.

@Drakesy: You think them being dumped into local slaughterhouses is less inhumane? You think cutting their balls off when they're small is less inhumane? You think offloading them to anyone who wants to take them, because it's cheaper than a bullet and disposal costs, is less inhumane? Genuinely, why?

    Free mower.

      And free fertiliser

  • +3

The phased end of the live sheep trade has massively depressed prices, making it uneconomic for many farmers to keep their sheep.
I wish I had somewhere to put one or two.

Has anyone claimed their free sheep yet?
My wife said no to a free sheep. :(
