How to Use Watch as Phone?

I want to be able to use my watch as my phone full time, I want to be able to move away from reliance on screen as entertainment.

As such, I bought a lte Samsung watch 5 in the recent deal. I want to know how to set it up if I want to keep my old phone number, but still be a cheap skate. I honestly don't know what I'm doing, but I think there's 3 things that seems to make this possible.

1) change my current plan to the cheapest 365 days plan I can find, and leave that on my phone, buy one of the Kogan esim plans, then forward all call from my old number to the new esim, leaving the phone on the whole time.

2) change my current phone number into a Kogan esim plan and just leave my phone sim-less

3) go with one of the big 3 and use the sharing number plan.

Can you guys tell if 2) is possible, and if it is, can I turn my phone off?

  • How to get a cheap esim plan on your watch, Without having to keep your mobile on all the time (use it stand alone)

    • You're stuck with Lebara for that solution, since it won't work with Amaysim. I did try sideloading the Amaysim APK to my watch but sadly it didn't load past the orange logo.

Also depends if the OP bought the 4G variant (RM-905F for example).

      • I think you just need a plan that provides a QR code for eSIM. Vodafone PAYG is good.

        • Lebara is on Vodafone's network anyway, isn't it? Unfortunately unusable in my area.

You can block the App Store, block the internet browser, and all sorts to turn your smartphone into a dumb phone. Get someone else to block them if you don't trust yourself. And leave some key apps like banking app.

    • It's more of a screen addiction. I love the colours, and as long as the device still can play videos, that's good enough for me to be addicted.

Even my Garmin watch does it, but far less so.

  • I want to be able to move away from reliance on screen as entertainment.

Couldn't you change to a non-smart phone device, and use that as your phone (only).

Nicer ambulances, faster response times, and better looking drivers.

A shoe phone is another option. No good if you like to walk and talk however.

forward all call from my old number to the new esim, leaving the phone on the whole time.

Phone does not need to be on for forwarding calls. But it will mean you get notifications on the watch for text messages and can reply.

    2) change my current phone number into a Kogan esim plan and just leave my phone sim-less

That makes more sense. Phone can sit at home using wifi. SMS goes direct to watch. You just need to change setting in watch for SMS app to use local.

    3) go with one of the big 3 and use the sharing number plan.

That will be very expensive, compared to buying the watch.

Can you guys tell if 2) is possible, and if it is,

Does Kogan provide a QR code? Looks OK to me. https://www.koganmobile.com.au/about/esim/

can I turn my phone off?

You will miss notifications for apps that don't run on the watch. That may be a good thing.

    • Thanks! Your comment is really helpful, you've answered all that I needed, I'll be ordering a kogan esim.
