Please Recommend a Sim Card Router

Need the OzB experts help please.

I currently have Superloop FFTN NBN connection. (50/20, $70 month)

My WiFi router is an old Telstra modem/Router or something that everything connects to, from way back in 2015 when I had a Telstra connection and supplied equipment.

I am spending more and more time away and between working shift work and time with girlfriend at her house, I am hardly ever home now, so could probably dump the SL NBN and just go back to something like a boost Sim card deal.

I have a few home apps/appliances connected, HiKVision CCTV cameras, Tapo indoor cameras, Xiaomi vacuum, Meross garage controller, Breville etc etc that I would like keep connected, to monitor the house while away.
I don't watch Netflix or Binge when I am home occasionally and randomly, so will cancel that as well, but want to have internet WiFi connection to the house to keep monitoring cameras and doors etc.

Everything is connected to this crappy Telstra box wifi.

So, my intention is to have one good router that every will be reconnected to, that also takes a Sim card. (For the boost etc)
I've tried the 4G dongle Sim card box, but has limited connections and range between garage door and the CCTV hard drive.

Please recommend your suggestions and possible cost and if you have any further questions or need information please ask

Thanks

    TP-Link Deco X20-4G
    Netgear LAX20

    https://www.amazon.com.au/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-4-Stream-Router-…

Wifi 6, 4G failover mode. The Deco X20-4G is not very cheap at $269 currently but to my knowledge this is the cheapest Wifi 6 capable 4G router you can buy. there was a price error deal 5 months ago where it sold for $99 each

Also will talk to other Deco units (as it's a mesh router) so you have a bit of flexibility there if you want to increase the range of your router.

    • Thankyou
Have created an alert for the TP Link Deco

  • As you are not very technical I would suggest calling superloop and buy one of the routers that they supply so they can help you when (NOT if) you have problems configuring it or setting up devices to use it.

    • The OP wants to leave superloop / NBN and is going with 4g as they are hardly at home

      • Correct. But want to have access to cameras, home apps as needed, to monitor house, while away. And have a a strong enough wifi connect that everything is connected to the one unit.

  • If you definitely want to get your own sim card for data/internet then try getting the nokia fastmile 5g modem router from fb marketplace.

Sadly we can't buy them from a retailer, but they are available for people who sign up with optus and other ISPs who provide 5g home internet and people who don't use it anymore sell them off.

This is for home internet so AC powered and no battery, but because of this it should have a good wifi range.

Get a Telstra smart modem gen 2. They take a SIM card for 4G backup. $20 off marketplace etc, free on hard rubbish.

  • Depends on price. A rooted Telstra Gen 2 or Gen 3. Cat 6 and 8 respectively. Can be used with Optus and Vodafone if rooted/flashed.

Huawei B818 is a Cat 19 modem. I tested this when I was in an apartment (the Telstra antennas were on the building adjacent to me) and got roughly 600mb downloads. Which I saved the screen shot.

More than sufficient. I personally would buy both as B818 has limited devices it can manage. Most may be fine but no harm in going bridge mode for the Huawei and Gen 2 being the router.

    Good luck and enjoy!

  • Future Broadband 12/1Mbps - $45 per month

A cheaper option than what you have now without turning to mobile data.

Come 01 Dec with the new NBN SAU being signed off on now 25Mbps is going to become the new entry level speed tier so things might get a bit better (faster speed for same pricing?) in this space.
