Fine Leaf Kikuyu Vs Kenda Kikuyu

We are going to be doing some landscaping at home (new build) and wandering if anyone has experience between Kenda Kikuyu and other kikuyu which seems to just be marketed as "Fine Leaf Kikuyu"

From my research it seems that Kenda is better able to self-repair, is that all? Is there any appearance or texture difference? disease resistance, etc?

We are after a durable lawn with soft blades and good year-round colour. Not as concerned about mowing frequency and water needs.

  • Sir Walter for the win !!!

    • Meh, too rough looking. If I live in 1000mm annual rainfall I'd get couch all the way, otherwise kiyuku, 50cm deep edging and a bottle of glyphosate nearby.

      • Yeah I thought Sir Walter was a bit too rough as well

  • Whittet.

  • I’m not in Adelaide, but around here the council tried to stop using kikuyu on its grounds. It’s grows to thick too fast and the runners will grow underneath barriers.

    I’d rather have buffalo.

  • I would get the normal Kikuyu seed and pull out some runners from parks or people's nature strip and watch it take over in summer.

It's impossible to kill it unless if you have napalms so you have nothing to worry about. Just be aware that you will be forever pulling them out if you have a garden bed nearby.

  • So I went and had a look at a display that had both these varieties of grass, they are visually identical and feel the same. The only difference according to staff is that Kenda is more vigorous than the fine leaf so it will recover from damage quicker but also require more mowing and removal from garden beds.

  • We have Tiftuf Hybrid Bermuda (couch type) - even as a novice lawn geek now certified geek it ticks the boxes for you.

I even did a full reno in April and it recovered within 2 weeks. Admittedly I did enjoy the winter period because the Tiftuf becomes dormant, less mowing and maintenance and still looks very green during winter.

As the warmer weather kicks in Im having to mow my lawn every 4-5 days.
