Help Me Identify The Issue - Windows 10 Stuck on Loading Screen - *SOLVED*

Hey guys,

I've got the following desktop PC I had no issues with until now.

Gigabyte a520i-ac
AMD 5600G
32GB RAM
NVME WD SSD (Boot device)
2.5'' Samsung SSD (data storage)

The PC is getting stuck on boot. Sometimes it goes through a series of boot loops - POST > Windows logo > POST before getting stuck at the Windows Logo or Repair screen.

Here's the pics:

I can enter BIOS and select boot devices. I've tried disconnecting the SSDs, created a new USB boot media, USB data recovery software, but I've not been able to boot from any of the external devices. They do work on a laptop though.

I suspect that's a mother board issue (still on warranty), I believe I'll have to purchase a similar one, as I don't want to reinstall the OS.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Fresh install and roll out the backup you created earlier.

    Troubleshoot ram?

    • Removed the sticks one by one and ran a MEMTEST on another PC, no issues. I'm not able to re-install because the motherboard refuses to boot from a USB device even though that's the only boot device set in BIOS.

    • Yeah step 1 is RAM diagnostics with bootable Memtesr86 or equivalent.

    • Try booting in safe mode first.
      Then try Recovery mode
Finally try reinstalling in case Windows 10 has become corrupted
But otherwise possible hard disk failure unfortunately

  • Re-install windows, it could be doddgy ram or driver issue or currupt update.

You call their support, and first thing they will ask you to do do is re-install windows before anything :)

  • Unplug the ssd that is only storage and try again
Have you another pc to plug the NVME drive into to clone?

1 Unplug the nvme drive and storage
2 remove battery and Clear the CMOS https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_a520…
3 Use rufus https://rufus.ie/en/ to make a Live cd bootable usb (use a linux OS)
4 use the usb drive in boot option in bios and see if it boots to linux with no other drive plugged in (try it with only one stick of ram)
It should work just double check all the settings in bios and report back

If it works then you can at least recover the data with linux as its probably a corrupt windows

    • Thanks. I have a full disk C: backup on an external drive. The problem is that I'm not able to boot from any USB device. All those USB images (Windows 11, Backupper, Rescue media) work on another PC.

The problem is you are booting into windows
You need to boot to something else as its probably a corrupt windows install the only way to tell is to boot to a live CD(USB)
Removing the windows drive out of the equation forces it to look for something else (A live linux).
until you try this it just looks like a corrupt windows install
The live cd will only run on the ram and usb it doesn't actually install anywhere

It should show up in the bios and make sure your motherboard doesn't have a usb dedicated for booting

  • Try rebuild the BCD via Command Prompt, set BIOS defaults first.

  • Have you tried googling "win 10 boot loop"?

    Resolution
    1. Hold the FN (Function key) down while powering on the system.
    2. Still holding the FN key, start tapping the Windows key to bypass the issue.
    3. This should bring up the login screen.

I don't have the FN key on the keyboard.

Have you tried googling "what if my keyboard doesn't have a FN key"?

Sorry, just joking. I don't know what you do in that case.

Plug in an external usb keyboard 👉😃👈

The images attached in the OP aren't working, must be privacy settings in Google Photos I believe.

    Anyways, try the following:
Unplug non-essential components (second RAM stick, second SSD, even GPU and move your display to onboard in bios)
    Clear the CMOS
Test with a different power supply if you have the option

    • Thanks for advice. I'll try clearing the cmos now. BTW the images are working fine for me, just tested from my work laptop.

  • Check the SSD's health

    • Not an issue. Works in another computer.

      • Tried a known good in the faulty system?

        • I've got 2 SSDs. They seem not to be a problem here. The issue is that I'm not able to boot from a USB to (re)install an OS.

Live Linux USB. If it won't boot to a live DE then bite the bullet and replace the mobo.

  • If your bios supports UEFI, try setting it to Legacy.

    • Thanks, already tried. Same difference.

  • You seem to have tried pretty much everything.
I am assuming you have tried different USB ports for booting into a PE (ruling out a faulty USB port). FAT32 USB format.
You only need the motherboard + CPU + 1 RAM stick to boot up (disable all SSD/NVME) - sounds like you already did this.
Only other thing I would try is to flash the BIOS. Are you using the latest BIOS (reflash the BIOS).
    https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/A520I-AC-rev-1x/support…

    • Yeah I've tried, the ports are not the issue. I was thinking about reflashing, thanks. I'll look into it now.

  • Is there a reason you didn't upgrade to Win 11?

    • I think this is irrelevant atm, I cannot boot the PC from a USB anyway.

  • UPD: Updated the BIOS via Q-Flash from F15 to F18d - no luck, still the same boot issue.

I've just noticed that the CPU cooler stops spinning after a minute while the system is stuck on the Windows logo or Automatic Repair screen.

Could this indicate a power supply issue?

    • Idle cpu

      • It's never been idle during system startup..

  • Take it to the place your bought it from and ask them how much it will cost to fix as it looks like you do not have the skills to fix it.

I bought the parts and assembled everything myself 2 years ago. I do have skills, but don't have spare parts to pinpoint the issue.

  • Well my opinion either motherboard or cpu is faulty, I'm more leaning towards motherboard well its the cheapest out of the two hardware to replace

Im guessing your using cpus onboard graphics have you tried using an old PCIe graphics card in the mix?

Edir: most times Windows still works even after replacing motherboard too another brand

  • i've had this before and probably would not have guessed it, bad power supply may also do this. Try changing the psu if you have a spare

    • I've ordered one, should arrive tomorrow.

  • Some of the Gigabyte motherboards have been faulty.

    • Even though Gigabyte is my favourite brand especially Gigabyte AORUS stuff my last pc setup issue was the Gigabyte motherboard well if that helps lolz, certainly its handy to have spare parts in my case numerous Ryzen cpus

Edit: funny on this faulty motherboard my 3400g CPU booted, ran but Windows crashed eventually, my 3600 and a 3700x cpus would not boot at all, might be wise for me too swap powersupply over and test again even though the powersupply used is brand new

      • I prefer Gigabyte since they have a local facility for repairs but their RMA service hasn't been what it used to be.

Update: Installed the new board - Asrock b550m-itx. Issue resolved.

    • There you go. Glad the problem is fixed. Asrock btw make some nice mobo's.
