Console/PC Gaming - Monitor Suggestion

Consolidating all the tech in the house into one room, PC's, Consoles etc etc with a view of "bringing us together" while we game. 2 kids and me. There's currently an Xbox Series S (Kid 2), Xbox Series X (Kid 1), PS5 (Me) and a MacBook (Me). For Christmas Kid 1 and Kid 2 are getting identical gaming PC's, nothing too fancy, but enough to get them started as they've been keen on playing Minecraft Java, and I'm keen on getting them started down the road of learning to use a mouse and how to type.

The current hold up is a decision on monitor(s) and what will work. We all currently game on separate 65" 4K TV's (not expensive ones, just the cheapy stuff).

I currently have around the place;

2 x Samsung G51 27" QHD's connected to my Mac for design stuff, which I'll be transferring over to my new desk in the gaming room
1 x Viewsonic 27" QHD monitor "gaming" monitor from a while back, still holds up though
1 x Asus 27" FHD monitor relegated to server monitor duties in the garage

What I'm stuck on, with a budget of around $400 for each kid for monitors, maybe stretching to $500.

What are suitable monitors for both Xbox Series S/X and PC Gaming with a RX 6650 XT?
Is a 27" QHD 1ms monitor sufficient for both PC and Xbox S/X?
Is 27" "big enough" for desk gaming, or should I go up to 32"?
Should I be looking to buy non-gaming 27" UHD monitors, noting HDMI 2.1 isn't within my budget.
Should I be looking at one monitor now, but then be looking to provide a second monitor as a near/mid term upgrade?

If 27" QHD monitors are sufficient, then it cheapens things up a bit as I can repurpose the Viewsonic for one kid and buy a second 27" QHD.
If I need to go to UHD, or go bigger than 27" then what options are suitable, i.e. would something like the 4/5ms refresh IPS UHD panels be suitable?
Ideally, 2 monitors would be the plan for the future, but I know the risk of only buying one now means that a second identical monitor may not be available in the future.

Other - If QHD isn't sufficient for console gaming, I'm going to take the 27" QHD, sell my Mac and convert back to PC gaming with 3 monitors. Just means I'll need to buy a monitor for each kid.

Thoughts, comments, questions?

Please don't ask ages, or comment on my parenting - we're all interested in gaming, the kids love it, and I'm passionate about it and it's a good opportunity to get them used to using PC's + bring us together rather than being spread through the house.

You'll switch from Mac if a monitor isn't suitable for console gaming on too?

  • What I mean is that I’m currently torn between the workflow on the Mac and my Windows gaming PC that just needs a GPU update.

If it turns out that I the spare QHD monitor I have isn’t up to scratch, then that’ll likely be the kicker I need to sell the Mac, upgrade the GPU and switch back to Windows.

Here's my 2c. from personal experience buying monitors for myself for consoles & PC:

With monitors you get what you pay for, and the 3 mains areas that affect cost are: panel type, resolution and refresh rate.
Panel type - definitely go with an IPS panel as they have the best colours (OLED is obvs out of the budget, VA isn't great in general, and TN is old tech and looks rubbish)

Resolution - don't bother with 4k (UHD). the 6650XT wouldn't be able to push that, and although consoles (XSX/ps5) state "4k" it's all upscaled from an internal res of (generally) around 1440p anyway, and if you're using it at a desk I honestly don't think you'd notice the difference at 27" anyway. Also both the Xseries X and S, along with the ps5 allow you to select 1440p at a system level. so yeah - either 1440(QHD) or 1080p would be my recco there.

refresh rate - don't bother with those super high gaming refresh rates. I'd say a 60hz panel would be fine for the kids - that's all the consoles do anyway, and if they're playing on a low-mid range pc they'd be happy with 60fps. but if you want more for "future proofing" then go 144hz, but no need to look at those above that ie. 240hz panel etc - you'd be paying for tech you're not using. And no need for HDMI2.1 - that's only if you're doing 4k120 which is punching above your performance, if you've got a basic PC + consoles for the kids.

You mention response times - don't worry about it. TV response times are between 20-40ms, so any monitor will be better than that. And with regards to size - if you're at a desk then 27" is fine, if you sit a fair way back you might want to go 32 but it's all personal preference. I'd actually argue that a 24" would be fine, but 27" is a pretty safe size.

One final thing - once you settle on a panel, you can check https://www.rtings.com/ for more detailed real-world info about it. They even have a "best gaming monitor" section - organised into sections (ie. budget) too if you want to browse there

  • Mostly agree with people above said.

    but here's my 2 cents

If your kid's main gaming rig is console, it's cheaper to consider a 32-40ish inch TV.
Some of the 50 inch 4K TV is sub 400 bucks.

TVs have larger pixel sizes, they not that good doing excel, but for console gaming, they are good enough, especially these days most of the TV support HDR.
TVs have speakers too, so you don't have to worry about the sound.
And for yourself, you can use the monitor around the house for yourself.

if you can't go that big (due to table size), many of the 4K HDR monitors around 27" is within your budget.
You probably noticed, I am very keen on HDR, that's few of the features now I cannot gaming without.
as for refreshment rate, in the past those 60hz monitors are very annoying to game on, but this day and age, refreshment rate is so high, I can't tell difference anymore.

I bought the latest Samsung 57" curve screen which is 8K 240, turns out RTX4090 doesn't support DP2.1, I borrowed a AMD card to try the monitor, and can't notice the difference between 120 and 240hz.
