Multiple Battery Power Tool - Question about Battery Requirements

I've recently purchased one of the Aldi combo garden tools and have come across a question that has left me scratching me head.

I understand that it takes two battery packs and that's fine. My question is, I currently have 2 packs, it's just that one is rated at 4Ah and the other is at 2Ah. Can I use these 2 packs or do I need to purchase at least one other battery pack so I can have a matching pair while using the tool?

I've read the instructions on the machine and haven't found any mention of this. Neither has a bit of googling netted me any clear answers.

Any thoughts and or advice regarding this?

  • You can use the 2 packs but you should use a matching pair as that would be better for the health of the 4Ah battery in the long run.

The ah is basically capacity, you’ll drain the 2ah one and the 4ah one will be roughly half charged still.

So it’ll work, but it’s not ideal. I’d get more batteries anyway, since it’s handy to switch them out if they run out during a job.

  • It's listed as a 20v tool (meaning 18v in reality) so I'd bet it doesn't use both batteries at once, it just has dual batteries for run time, so the mismatched capacity shouldn't matter in that case.

    • This makes a lot of sense!

*edit - bugger. Now that I've looked at the box, the markings are more of 40v then it's (2x20V) in parentheses. I guess I'll have to test it by using one pack at a time.

Should be able to tell if it's actually 36v tool. Try it with one battery and then with two see if it sounds faster etc or doesn't run at all with just one battery.

        • It appears to be a 36/40v tool. It only operates with both battery packs, so, I couldn't determine if it was stronger with 2 vs just 1.

    • I have the 2022 model of the mower and it drains both 4ah batteries at the same time.

With the EU would step in and force all these tool companies to use a universal battery standard.

    • EU probably make every brand to use same interface, but 2Ah vs 4Ah ? Some power tools don't need 4Ah, too much weight to carry.

  • Thanks for input, folks. Much appreciated.

I'll update the thread as soon as I've had more experience or as soon as I know more.
