What Is The Going Price for Japanese Sushi Rice (Koshikari/etc) ? [NSW]

Hey all,

Just wanted to know what the going price for Japanese sushi rice is and what everyone's preference is? I'm slowly getting into making my own sushi and want to try them out.

I saw a 10kg Japanese Koshikari rice bag being sold for $95 at Konbini 8 and thought that there should be a cheaper price than this. I believe there was a cheaper variant at at the Top Ryde japanese supermarket, but its been some time since I was last there. Does anyone know where I can get great value on Japanese sushi rice?

Would Korean supermarkets also have cheap Japanese sushi rice if bought in bulk?

Additionally, I'm interested to know which type of Japanese rice do people use when they cook Japanese cuisine? I know sometimes I'm lazy and just use jasmine rice because thats all we ever had.

I find korean sushi rice to be cheaper (in Melbourne at least). But you can also use any short grain rice

    • oh first time ive heard of them. how much do they normally go for?

  • You can follow ichiba_topryde on IG for specials. They had a Koshikari special a few months back which were from different prefectures. From memory the most expensive one was sub$70

  • I used to get Niigata Koshihikari Rice 5kg from Costco. Now it is gone sadly.

  • You can get some cheaper Vietnamese grown sushi rice from Asian supermarkets. For general Japanese cuisine you can use Sunrice Medium grain (the red bag).

  • The real deal is totally worth it

For my dailies, these are my preferences:
    1. Sunrice Koshihikari
    2. Sunrice Short Grain
    3. Sunrice Medium Grain

    Pre-covid, I could get them at $20-25 per 10kg.
    Nowadays, it's $30-40 per 10kg.
It's also difficult to find Koshihikari now due to shortage.

Sushi rice is basically short grain rice but not all short grain rice makes good sushi.
If you are making sushi for special occasions, I recommend Akitakomachi or anything $80-150 per 10kg in Asian groceries.

I personally do not like these:
    - Obento Sushi Rice
    - Sunrice Hinata Short Grain

To give an idea of what's available and pricing:

JFC white rice range, some are on sale atm

Niigata koshihikari 5kg $31+ s&s on Amazon AU, same price at ichiba atm

Massigura rice 5kg $33+ on Amazon AU, JFC current sale $27+

Amazon price of above brand koshi and masshi are similar to my local Korean grocery.

While we occasionally indulge in these expensive rice, our "everyday" rice is Sunrice Australian medium grain. Great for Japanese food including sushi IMHO.
