Where Do You Keep Your Open Bottle of Tomato Sauce?

Was at a mates place today and asked for some ketchup for my meat pie.. when he handed me an open bottle from the pantry! I’ve always kept sauce once opened in the fridge. It got me thinking, who is right in this situation and where does the OzBargain think tank sit on this subject?

  • Ours always goes in the fridge after opening. Personally I like that the sauce isn't as runny when it kept in the fridge vs on the shelf.

  • Fridge. Usually if the tomato sauce bottle is left out, youll get a very thin liquid come out first - even if you shake it.

I don't have any desire for that, I came for the thick sauce, not for they thin watery sauce.

    Winter - pantry
Summer - fridge, as it outgasses above 30deg and stinks up the pantry (or anywhere else you stored it).
Unless you keep your house airconned for all of summer (unsustainable, negligent and borderline unethical imo, even though I'm sure at least half the wealthy people do it)

Those unethical wealthy ingrates running their 200W ducted evap systems all summer!

        ^ found him :)

it's more the 2kW split systems in every room set for different temperatures forever fighting each other that I have issues with..
but even evaps are closer to 600-700W and don't need to be run when no one is home, nor set for 20deg when it's only 25 outside at night

        • 700W would not be average evap load, that would be max load. Our evap averages approx 250W, so the same ballpark as a computer and TV idling. The idea that airconning a house all summer is unethical is a propaganda-induced masochism.

How big a problem is this really? Sounds like a perfect story for ACA or Today Tonight. (After they run the optimal tomato sauce hot-take story).

  • I put my sauce in the fridge for a week to see if JLo would call. It's back in the cupboard

  • In the pantry with the HP sauce, BBQ sauce, chilli sauce, horseradish and mustards, marmalades and jams.

  • I stupidly tried a few times to not put it in the fridge. But eating rotten tomato sauce that ruined the whole pie taste is just not good.

It seems to ferment or something when not kept in the fridge. It’s disgusting. That’s after around about a week or so.

And this is for any brand I tried, like Heinz, Fountain.

Maybe in winter or a cold climate it may be ok. But not for me. I follow the instructions on the bottle to keep it in the fridge once opened since then.

  • I keep mine at the McDonald's when I ask for 20 extra ketchups with my one $2 hamburger.

Pantry when it's sealed, fridge when it's opened. Read the labels on the bottles if you are unsure.

Can't participate in the poll :(

Watch the episode of WTFAQ on ABC. Very interesting discussion/experiment on this question.

  • Need poll option: I only have BBQ sauce and always keep in the fridge after opening

  • Haha, I do 50/50. I buy the big 2L bottle and top up my small 500ml squeeze bottle as required. The big 2L bottle goes in the pantry and the 500ml goes in the fridge. I just don't have room in my fridge to put a big 2L bottle for months on end and being Ozbargain I'm too cheap to keep buying individual bottles when there's a cheaper bulk pack!

  • Where is the option for, not having tomato or barbecue sauce as they taste awful and just a variety of chilli sauces for all occasions, all of which are kept in the pantry.

  • I don't want bacteria or mould in the sauce so I keep it in the fridge

  • When airborne bacteria can breed in tomato sauce, I'll stick it in the fridge. I'm not exactly sucking on the bottle, so not much cause for contamination.

  • it have to be in the fridge after opening, who want to take a chance of ruined tomatoes sauce :)

  • Always go by instructions on bottle.

    1x says "refrigerate after opening".
another says - "once open, keep in a cool/dry place".

presume it comes down to the amount of preservatives + salt used.
