I think this is the lowest price for SK Hynix Beetle 1TB external SSD. It is PCIE gen 3, so it does not run as hot as Sandisk Extreme portable or Samsung T7 Shield.

2tb. I would have think about it. But still external enclosure drives r better

  • Ordered one .. now lets talk about the quality:p
Is it good for mac ?? :p

    • +2

I don't think external drives differ based on your operating system

      • +1

Depends which File System you format your drive with. APFS is more performant (and has a few other benefits) than ExFAT on macOS.

        • Inwill do APFS for iphotos backup

    • Fine for Time Machine backups. Probably wouldn’t hold up if you’re doing a full 2tb a night, but if you’re plugging it in every week or fortnight, it’s probably only going to get 5gb of writes, or 50gb if you’re a power user or doing creative stuff. Either way it’s not going to reach its maximum TBW during the life of your Mac. (FWIW, you can’t easily check TBW on Mac, and if you need to ask how, you shouldn’t be doing it, ever).

        • Should have clarified: it’s not easy to check *external SSDs. I believe it requires a privileged kernel external that can only be run by disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP), even with DriveDX. Don’t do that.

    • SK as a brand is great

    Speaking of mini SSD units.

If any of ya'll have steam decks where you upgraded drives, you can chuck the old 2230 drives into tiny 2230 enclosures even smaller than this!

Worth looking up 2230 USB C on aliexpress as there's a bunch of options and they're $10-$20

    • +2

Good idea but the problem is that most users would've bought the 64gb version so it's prob not worth spending another $10-$20 to make it a 64GB USB drive. Sure speeds would be great, but it's only 64GB….

      • That's a fair point - I guess it's mainly just if you would like to do something with that 64gb.

Since it's not going to be used in any systems, better somewhere at least.

Am a big Samsung T7 fan, but this looks worth a try. Bought!

  • It looks very neat in photos.

  • This any good to use as external drive for mac for disk cache/swap for adobe?

    • Should be as good as any unless you go for a very expensive thunderbolt option.
Speeds seem limited by the USB-C cable speed.

Should reformat the drive to APFS though I think for best performance.

      • Wouldn’t the Mac HFS+ give best performance? And maybe I should look for a thunderbolt enclosure instead.

        • APFS is best for SSD drives
HFS+ is best for mechanical drives

          Pros of Apple’s APFS

          • Allows for clones or multiple copies of the same file, with only changes stored as deltas, which reduces storage space when making revisions or copying files
          • Can create point-in-time snapshots
          • Full-disk encryption with single or multi-key encryption for added security
          • Uses checksums for data integrity of metadata
          • Metadata corruption prevention due to creating new records instead of overwriting existing ones, which can become corrupt due to system crashes
          • Increases performance on some devices by eliminating the need to write changes twice compared to HFS+ Journaled file systems
          • More efficient management of storage typically yields additional free space.
  • Is this an overkill if I only want to store photos and videos? If it is what's the recommendation for 2T? Thanks

    • I would say it depends on how important the photos are. Modern Memory chip based storage disadvantage is when it dies….it dies quickly and takes all data with it. But it is small, cheap and fast to transfer files.

Personally I would only use this for photo keeping if I get 2x and mirror one to the other for redundancy.

Yea I lost my crypto wallets this way. Not good

      • On the other hand, they're physically more robust - can send one flying across the room and it won't break, whereas a 2.5" rust spinner may not survive and a 3.5" even less so. The higher speed reduces a backup/verification pain point, so you might be more inclined to do them. Whether it's the better option can of course end up coming down to price and capacity requirements.

I like the design, but wish that it came in 2TB and 4TB variants.

    • +1

same it looks so … comfortable? idk how to even describe it. Like cute even. Wonder why there arent 2TB think they're the norm nowadays because 1TB arent that large anymore considering games are 100GB normally.

      • I know 1TB USB pen-drives are already
on the horizon, but a bit dearer…and the benefit
with pen-drives are, that the USB connector is part of the body.

        With these portable storage devices,
you always need to have the USB-C cable handy.
