Open Source Home Automation Setup - My OZ Smart House

Good morning everyone!

I just wanted to introduce my new venture: My OZ Smart House. For the last 5 years or so, I've been working a lot in home automation including Home Assistant setup and configuration. Over time, I have realized that there are a lot of people who are looking for personalized support and guidance - whether they're just starting out or or stuck with a particular problem that requires in-depth troubleshooting.

Keeping all this in mind, I've started this small side hustle to help people out there and have some fun outside of the regular 9-5 grind. I won't bore you with a lot of the details of what I'm offering as the website linked above has a ton of information on how I can help.

Happy to chat more or answer questions.

Have a good week and happy Halloween!

P.S I can be contacted via [email protected].

It's not for me, but good luck.
My only feedback is to lose the Americanized spelling (assuming that your target market is Australia).

    • Thanks! Noted.

      • Second to that - I know it's all part of the name but the ".house" domain may scare people off, the general public may see it as a little "scammy", see if you can get an alias ".com.au" tld just in case - people just (still) don't realise there are other options other than the original com and net

        • That’s a fair call. I’ll do something about it.

          • @darksith90: I might have to use your services at some point! Good niche product imo

How do you plan to market yourself to new audiences?

    • I’m running some ads on Google and Facebook. Also hoping to generate some interest from forums such as this. Would love to hear other ideas as well.

IMO Facebook is pretty good with their ability to target specific demographics.

Google ads are like throwing money away..

        YMMV.

      • I wouldn't bother with Google, it can become a waste. Facebook is your best bet, just make sure your targeting is on point. You don't want to be targeting the wrong people and wasting $$$.

        • Thanks, this is helpful!

Good work on creating a business model, but I believe Open Source Home Automation is for automation Hobbist. There are plenty of helpful forums, chat groups etc at your fingertips when you need help.
It would be a pretty hard sell in a forum like this as Ozb as we like things free or cheap. Iess tech-savvy people would go on the HomeKit path rather than pay someone for OS project.

Normally I'd agree with you here. But I also spent 20 minutes behind an ~80 yo (possibly a retired plumber) retrospectively looking for Bunnings to configure a smart lock on his phone, after the locksmith installed and bailed.

Absolutely not the demographic I'd predicted would even buy such a thing, but feels like there is a support need gap in the market. Feel OP could offset a lot of their overheads just by doing the last step for things like this, as well as the more extensive planning/design/roll-out for new builds and renos.

  • Didn’t realise I’d clicked on ozfreebusinessadvertising

Would you design a home system?

    • I'm not sure I fully understand what you mean by a 'home system' but we can definitely have a chat to see how I can help. Can you please shoot me a quick note on [email protected] or alternatively, visit my website Myozsmart.house and schedule a 30-min catch up via Calendly on Contact Us page.
