Preparation for Black Friday

Hi ozb community.
I am going to do my best to get some great deals this BF. I want to see what you have done in the past or any tips to maximize saving.
I'll be looking at getting a new TV, soundbar and router.

Is buying GC in advance the best tactic?

If so what's the best gc to get for electronics.

Thanks in advance

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2023

Well, you have come to the right place, OzBargain will have all the deals.

I prepare by being ready to be let down for yet another year.

Just like how Click Frenzy is also a let down almost every year.

      You sound like my parents

    Preparation for Black Friday

pay off your CC so you have full credit limit to waste for (some) unnecessary purchases thanks to ozb to make you think you get a deal but the real deal is actually by not spending $

  • +3

Unless you know exactly where you'll shop, GC may be problematic e.g. buy JB GC but spend at Amazon.

I usually have an idea what items I want (i.e. specific make/model), their normal price, and the price I'd prefer to pay and then just see what occurs on the day (or days preceding).

If you weren't going to buy it anyway, it's not a deal.

Don't forget that some products mark up their price in the lead up to these deals so the amazing 50% you're getting isn't that great. Also good to compare to what prices are online elsewhere, and what the models actually are.

A product at 50% for $500 is still $500 more than you were going to spend if you weren't going to get it…

    Generally BF is rubbish anyway.

If you weren't going to buy it anyway, it's not a deal.

That is some seriously wise advice! 🙂👍

    • +4

yep, totally agree with prices being jacked up leading to it.

If the item is on amazon it's a good idea to use camelcamelcamel to see the price history and check the usual price before grabbing the item that has a 'BF special' on it for the sake of it.

I spend the 365 days before black Friday constantly refreshing the ozbargain new deals page. I find this prepares me enough.

    • Trigger finger ready!

      It's a multiple times a day habit :)

Is it worth getting up at midnight? If so I should probably book in annual leave for the Friday

    • Is it worth getting up at midnight?

      No.

    • +1

      Thats ozbargain commitment!

It depends on if there is something limited in supply that you want

    • Are you up and bargaining Pusdi?

      • +1

Yeah I was, but disappointed as the TV I want isn't on sale. Guess I will have to lay in waiting until the time is right. Crossing my fingers for a lightning sale from Sony.

Crossing quite a few small ticket items off my shopping list though.

How about you, have you saved some beans?

        • Aww yes thats the spirit be ready.

          Yay for smalls.

I did save quite a few in the presales this week, i prefer to get in early for some things to make sure they dont sell out on me.

Nothing much today so far but mostly because things are tight.

Thanks all for sharing. So as for any tips on maximizing savings (besides not buying anything) is it just cash rewards and discounted gift cards?

  • +1

Will Cotton-on have a sale? Im playing chicken with something i need on there.

  • Interested to now if Xbox's would be on sale. It's time to upgrade my Xbox One so I can play the new Forza and they are normally excluded from any sales and only discounted if they are refurbished, grey import or come with a game I don't want.

    • Used can get very cheap

  • +2

Preparation should have started at least 2 weeks before where you know what type of things you're looking for a deal on.

E.g. My kid wanted a new set of earphones… I tracked the one they liked, and watched how today that manufacturer just upped their prices… this will happen with many products for Black Friday and Cyber Monday… if you don't do your research early, you'll think you're getting a massive bargain, whereas it might only be 5% off the price from 2 weeks before BF/CM…

  • Has anyone had any alerts from workwear places that they will be having a sale? Economical workwear never seems to go on sale.

  • So far ive had several alerts from places with 'early black friday sales' which have just been their regular sale discount that they do several times a year

    • +1

I've been seeing this as well. I'd hate to buy before early in the week of BF sales, then Black Friday/Cyber Monday rocks up and then items I want have further decreased in price. :-/

      • +1

Me too, problem is, they might sell out by then.

        A game of chicken.

Sign up for an account with the retailers you want to shop from.

JB Hifi will have an early event this Sunday.

  • +1

Well its a bit dull so far, one week to go

  • +1

Seems like the retailers preparation for Black Friday is to massively increase the prices beforehand. I'm looking at prices on Amazon that are well up on what I knew they were before.

    • +1

JB Hifi showing amount off the “ticket price” when the products have never been selling at those prices

Optus will be praying to the internet gods.
