Banks over in the US will do it for you (just pretend that you withdrew cash from their ATM). Bartenders can break notes for you too.

Don't just get $5's either.. make sure you have a bunch of singles too.

You won't need a lot if you're just using card to pay for most stuff as you can add a tip to the total.

Remind me of Homer and Apu episodes.

    [Wiki] Though he pretends to be happy, Apu deeply misses his job at the Kwik-E-Mart, so Homer, feeling guilty, accompanies him to the head office in India. There they meet with the head of the Kwik-E-Mart corporation, who grants them only three questions;

    [ForeverDreaming.org]
You may ask me three questions.

That's great, because all I need is one.

Are you really the head of the Kwik-E-Mart?

    Yes.

    Really?

    Yes.

    You?

Yes. I hope this has been enlightening for you.

    But I must—

    Thank you. Come again.

    But—

    Thank you. Come again.

Well, that was a big bust.

Is he really the head of the Kwik-E-Mart?

    [ Angry Groan ]

    No need to apologize, Apu.

It was as much my fault as it was yours.

    [ Growling ]

    [ Gagging ]

Okay, Apu! I accept your apology.

  • You want a steady supply of ones, not fives - unless you're an especially affluent & benevolent visitor. Withdraw from an ATM after you arrive (ideally not at an airport). Buy a snack or drink and ask for the change in ones. Any time you break a twenty, ask for change in ones. Helps that all notes are the same colour as recipients of cash don't count their tip while you're present.

    Just don't tip, problem solved.

  • You quickly learn to keep every dollar bill you can get in the USA, as everyone in the service industry is out for a tip. For most purchases I used my cards and the payment terminals helpfully suggest a 20% tip, or you can go higher. Yes, it's a rip off, and most people in the USA hate the tipping culture (unless they're on the receiving end). In some states the minimum wage for tipped service workers is $2.13. They literally live off tips. It's a terribly sick system.

I just Googled average wage for a waiter in California where a lot of Aussies will visit and it is USD14.05 per hour. That is AUD21.82 per hour. And you want to tip them 20%+ on top of that? You and every other table that they are serving. Crazy.

Edit: Minimum wage in California goes up to AUD24.83 per hour in January. I'm sorry but that sort of wage does not need tipping.

    • Beware the suggested tip on the terminal or hard copy check is based on the total bill when servers only expect 20% of the pre-tax amount.

  • If you spend $1 at a shop in USA and pay with a $10, you’ll probably get $9 back in ones - use these. Last time I was there they just accumulated so quickly.
