Costco Executive Member Exclusive discounts

We were in the Ipswich (QLD) store the other day and they had a few Executive member exclusive discounts. They had signs spruiking the discount above the products as well as the staff trying to upsell at the checkout.

The discounts were actually pretty good for us as it's stuff we normally get (mostly when they discount though).

  • $15 off pack of Salmon
  • $10 off pack of Bulgogi Beef
  • $5 $4.50 off pack of Cherry Truss tomatoes

It was the first time we had seen these sorts of exclusive discounts. Are they having trouble getting people to sign up, possibly at Ipswich in particular? Have you seen these exclusive discounts before?

  • our membership was due, and then the lady explained i don't need to renew if i signed up for the executive membership for $65, so effectively i got a year of executive membership for free

    • Pretty good deal. Do you spend much? I don't know if we will get the full Executive membership back via the 2% but we should easily make the difference back and that's excluding any of these exclusive discounts.

You need to spend $3000 to get 2% back to cover $60 upgrade. But those 3 specials if you get them all it will worth half membership already.

        • We would easily spend $3000 a year. I don't know if we would get the full membership back though. Still don't know how you get the money back.

We were pleasantly surprised by the three specials. We routinely get the three things too. I think they had $4 off goats cheese? I didn't really look at that one closely as we don't buy it.

          • @ozbs25: $60 off (or $50?) power tools also in special.

          • @ozbs25: By the way if you sign up after 6 months of your normal membership, they only charge you 6 months worth of upgrade (=$30).

            • @foxmulder: I had to renew anyway so it looks like we just ended up paying the $130.

          • @ozbs25: I think you get the money back within about ten days of it running out.

The 2% reward is issued by email to the primary member approximately 10 days prior to the member’s renewal date and reflects the reward earned up until the issue date.
Purchases made after this date will be added to the following year's reward calculation.
A member must be a current, paid Executive Member at the end of the membership year to be entitled to the reward.

    • Nice!

I paid 65 for renewal and then a month later another 65 for exc

We got the Bulgogi Beef on the deal.It is a tad fatty buy very tasty.

We went the executive upgrade because we took my brother along and he bought a far amount of stuff. The discount paid for 1/2 the pro rata cost of the executive membership. A few deals like this might pay for the rest.

    • We get the Bulgogi regularly (but only when they discount it). You can probably make it yourself but I'm not sure if we could get it to taste this nice and I don't know how much you would be saving. I guess you could probably save a bit at least but my wife likes it as it's easy for her. We make pork tonkatsu and a vietnamese style pork already and we've got a kind of production line for that. Maybe one day we will try to make bulgogi and see what if the saving if worth all the effort.

      • Not sure if it is the same thing but Costco does have Bulgogi marinade sauce. Given the meat is rib eye I wonder about the savings anyway.

        • Yeah, we get that too. I think we tried to make something but we didn't use the right meat so it wasn't nearly the same.

It is listed on their website

    Executive Summer Savings
    Active: 30 Oct 2023 – 26 Nov 2023

    • Cheers, first time seeing this.

  • Is it 2% reward for all purchases? If so then the executive upgrade pays for itself, in reward credit, after spending just $3,250

    • Not for fuel (and maybe alcohol? Not sure about that one)

“Members earn with every shop, although there are exclusions: the membership fee, fuel, bullion, Shop Cards, food court items, donations and GST. Savings are shown at the bottom of each receipt and total accrual can be tracked in the Costco app. Ten days before membership expiry, members will be able to use their reward – which can be accessed directly from the register.”

Alcohol doesn’t seem to be an exclusion.

  • Just my 2 cents
Costco is overrated unless you have a family of 8+

    • +1

Their staples like egg, milk, giant muffins, roast chickens are pretty good value.

      • *if you're a family of 8

        • The minimum purchase on the eggs was quite a lot. I mathed out 3-4 eggs a day for myself and it just fit in with the expiry date.

We are a family of two and we get our value from Costco. The value isn’t in the groceries, although the good value on the cheeses and wine helps. The value is in the electronics, the household goods, the cheaper name brand products. The value is buying something with the knowledge you can return it if you don’t like it.

People need to broaden how they think about Costco.

      • +1

Ive been there 4 times and try to convince myself it'll be worth it everytime. It never is, even the member i go with questions why he's still a member outside the cheap fuel.

        • +1

YMMV but that doesn’t mean other people aren’t getting the value. I got 6 bottles of the Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay at $17 each delivered. They are $38 each at Dan’s. That is a saving of $120 in just one transaction. With that you are almost covering the Executive membership let alone the standard one. We’ve bought a mattress, an upright freezer, an Instant pot, household items, clothes, etc. Every purchase was cross checked against online prices and I only bought them if it was cheaper. Not everything is cheaper at Costco, and it certainly doesn’t suit some people’s buying patterns, but people need to look at the spectrum of their goods and services rather than just concentrate on one element. The fact you can take back stuff you don’t want is one of the real selling points. It allows you to try stuff you might’ve been considering as an option but weren’t sure.
