Camry Brake Light Switch Stopper

I'm looking for a Camry Brake Light Switch Stopper like this.

Online, it seems the earliest delivery is from Aussie eBay sellers selling 10-20 pieces, but it could take a week.

Does anyone know if I can pop into a Toyota dealership on Monday (or auto retail store) and pick up 1 or 2 genuine or generic parts for a couple of dollars?

Today my wife had a flat battery; she didn't leave the lights on and the people at a cafe were kind enough to help jump start the car. When she came home I noticed the brake lights were still on after the car was turned off and then on closer inspection of the car floor on the driver's side, found the two parts of the stopper (the round flat piece and the pointy bit).

I've disconnected the battery for the time being, but we need the car on the weekend for a few pre-arranged engagements and I don't want to have to disconnect and reconnect the battery for a week if I can avoid it.

  • You can just use a suitable trim clip that you can get from Supercheap auto etc until you get the proper replacement. Is the Toyota dealer not open on a Saturday? They will likely have 50 of them in stock.

    • The two nearest dealership receptionist said the parts team will be back on Monday, but I will check again tomorrow morning. Will also check with the Supercheap guys by bringing in my broken parts.

      • Do you still have your one? Just superglue it on if it's only the retaining post that broke off.

        • Brilliant. Why didn't I think of that; even if as a stop gap measure.

Go to the wreckers and get one and just use that one until they arrive in the post.
You could just put something in there to make up the gap instead of disconnecting the battery but don't drive it at all as the break lights are always on
Know anyone with a 3d printer?

    • Thanks, I was going to look at some diagrams tonight to see if there was an interim solution to make up the gap, because it's located in an awkward place to get a clear look.

I don't know if this is the exact correct part but if you can find a 3d printer this looks about right and should print quick:

    • That's it, thanks.

Get a sturdy piece of plastic, cut a disc of suitable size and use some silicone to stick it over the hole for now.

  • Thanks for all your suggestions. I managed to put in a temporary (and possibly a permanent) solution: double sided tape applied to the back of the disc. The retaining pin isn't needed if you can stick the disc in place.

The hardest part was finding and accessing the gap. I had to put my head of the floor of the driver's side and arch my back over the rocker panels, press down on the brakes with one hand to open up the gap and use the other hand to fiddle around and slip the disc in, while holding a torch. Next time I'll make it easier on myself and just lay some newspaper on the floor and use a headlamp.

This guy used furniture protector pads and it's lasted him over 4 years. The key is it has a sticky side and is roughly the same thickness as the disc. But he should be so lucky - his Mazda 4WD is so much easier to access than a Camry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tUjsVa3zQs

    • Perfect. I’ve heard someone suggested a 5c coin glued in place for a similar fox in a different make. It often comes down to what’s available at hand.

      • I also used a 5c piece wrapped in Gorilla tape with a small roll at the back to make it double sided. It kept falling out and lost its stickiness and I was too lazy to unwrap and combine with a second 5c piece. This would have worked for me as well.
