Vertical Monitor Recommendations for 2nd Monitor

I Currently have a setup like this
https://imgur.com/a/MthzHCY

1: main wall mounted 27" 2560x1440 for photo and video editing
2: usually email & video playing or reference doc, 23" 1920x1080 Vertical stand on table

No. 2 is a V old one, now has a few dead pixels right in the middle. Looking to score a replacement when Black Friday comes along.
I only have space for verticals so you would need to be on a stand that can turn 90 degrees.

I haven't bought a monitor for more than 10 years what should I be looking for nowadays? The FHD is a bit too narrow to be fully useful right now, and gmail doesn't work well with 1080 width. But I figure It would not make sense for the second to be higher resolution than the first?

I guess would I get a smaller 2560x1440 Vertically? They mostly seem to start at 27" tho. Some 24" are 350-500.

It's 23" to the top of the wall mount, so I'm limited to that space. What else would I look for?
I see a lot of these portable ones on deals and I don't know the difference and advantages or disadvantages.

Eg why are portable ones higher res in smaller size and cheaper? Are they good enough for a 2nd mon?

  • I think you'd be fine with a vertical 1440p 27" even if it isn't smaller. When using two monitors of the same size in a horizontal - vertical arrangement, I like to align the tops of the screen and let the bottom edge of the vertical one hang a bit lower than that of the horizontal one. You can then adjust the height of both of them together to find something comfortable. Even if the monitor doesn't come with a rotatable stand, you can buy a freestanding desktop monitor stand for not much money as long as the monitor has VESA mounting.

    • I'm lining up the tops of the monitors and currently I have 23 inches from my desk to the top.
So, ideally I want something that is Vertically 23.

      • Vertical 27" screen height is typically around 23.5" for the viewable area if you can manage it + bezels. If not, you have to look at the much more niche high-resolution sub-25" market which is difficult as you mentioned in your original post. The only other option I can think of is to sell your current main monitor and get a 1440 vertical resolution ultrawide format e.g., 34" 3440x1440 to replace both of them with a single monitor. You're quite constrained in both vertical and horizontal space if I understand correctly so there aren't too many great options.

        • I mainly like multiple as the No.1 I can dock left/right in Win10, the No2 I can dock full. A single isn't convenient that way.

I'm wondering why a portable high-resolution sub-25" is cheaper than the same as a normal monitor.

          • @furyou: You could try to achieve this by splitting the single monitor into multiple virtual displays but I agree it's not as convenient for that use case. You could get this: https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/aab029cb which might be an ideal fit for your setup but it's terrible value for money.

            • @xxBARGAINGODxx: I also wondered about getting 2x FHD 13" portable, mounting horizontally stacked so it adds up to what I have now in size. They seem thin bezels, and if I can find a mount..

Is there some flaw with the portables used every day like this? Prob is I only have 1 spare hdmi out on my gpu.

              • @furyou: You'll need as many HDMI/DP outputs on the computer as you require inputs on the displays unless you have a computer (probably laptop) that supports DP or HDMI alt-mode over USB-C or have monitors that support daisy-chaining (pretty unusual). I don't have any personal experience with portables, sorry I can't be of more help there.

              • @furyou: Why not just one really big 4K monitor? It'd be equivalent of four 1080p screens.

                • @AustriaBargain: mainly the docking. And my No1 is a nice calibrated screen for work. Only need a cheapo for the side docs.
