Home Window Tint

We recently got quotes for awnings and blinds which were very expensive. additionally, some of the windows couldn't support awnings due to the hollow blue board cladding or the design.

Another option to block the sun is window tinting. This is also much cheaper. I know tinting will help in summer. However, I am worried about blocking the nice winter sun that warms the house during the day (we are in Melbourne).

The window tinting businesses claim the film helps in winter as less heat is lost from heating. However, I believe during the day any benefits from the sun would be gone.

Has anyone had experience with tinting their homes and was it worth it?

  • Window Tint, not blinds replacement, at night, when lights are on, outside people can see inside. But day time less glare bit more privacy.

, I am worried about blocking the nice winter sun that warms the house during the day

No idea, but some manufacturers claim there is a heat reduction.

    • Thanks. We have blinds inside already on most of the windows so privacy isn't really an issue.

  • Do you want to block sunlight or heat? Whatever you do will affect summer and winter.

Insulation is good until the heat can’t get through when you want it to.

    • Want to block the heat really.

Then you ideally want something that can be removed during winter to allow the warmth in.

Had shadesail blinds installed at our old house and they were good for keeping heat out in summer, but rolled them away in winter to allow warm sunshine in

  • I wouldn't worry about missing the winter sun in Melbourne. Doesn’t happen often enough to be an issue.

You could look at honeycomb blinds on the inside, buy from somewhere like Tuiss / Blinds Online and they arent super expensive. Depends on your window though, as you probably want better looking blinds covering up the honeycomb (so you need to be able to put the honeycomb blinds within the window recess. If you have a window recess).

Online places also do outdoor blinds, which obviously wont help every window since you cant install them in some places, but you can perhaps get a few.

If you order through one of the custom blind/curtain places its much more expensive - like 3X more. They do install them for you which is worth something, although indoor blinds are very easy to install yourself if you have a screwdriver (and maybe a drill depending on your window frames)

+1 for Blinds Online - Had some bay window blinds made, turned out to be ~20mm too narrow, they just sent out a whole new set with minimal fuss.

    • Cheers. I didn't know honeycomb blinds were for that purpose. I will look into it.

  • I’m pretty sure the blue board sheet is connected to the frame of the house. Could the awning not be connected to the frame?

    • It is connected to the frame but is hollow in parts. The guy who came out said that it is very hard to install on when it is hollow.

But it can still be done. It just a bit of extra work.

  • Happy Tint is whom I’ve used in the past. Very happy with them. Just put in a request for another quote for windows

I have tinted windows (both the dark ones and the mirrored ones) and they do block a lot of the heat. But you don't get much heat through windows in winter anyway

They're pretty cheap. Why not just do them now, and then remove them in winter if its too much?

    • That is certainly an option as I wasn't aware until recently that there is tint that is easily removable.

      • Wouldnt say its easily removable per say, but it's just plastic film. It should peel off relatively easily in the first couple off months. Otherwise a razor scraper makes short work of it

    • I'm getting window tinting quotes of more than $2K+
      Doesnt seem cheap

  • I recommend plantation shutters. I know it is costly but it looks amazing as well as keeping the house cool in Summer and warm in Winter.
I only wish I did them sooner and on all my windows instead of timber venetians.

    • This being Ozbargain I should mention you can get plantation shutters for a fraction of the price from FB Marketplace/Gumtree. People remove or replace them during renovations, so if you can find ones that fit your window you can save hundreds.

If you have a lot of windows, odd dimensions or want them all to match this option probably won't suit though.

  • I'm pretty sure you've misinterpreted what the window tinter said.
