Do We Really Need a Regular Pest Control

I’ve done a pest control pre-covid and hated it the way it’s sprayed all over the walls and windows leaving residues visible.

I don’t have a particular issue with pests like cock roaches or spiders but my mrs thinks otherwise.

My only concern is termites as I have a large garden and have seen termites wings fell on the grounds. (Attracted by garden lights)

Thoughts?

Can’t you just pee on the walls?

If you don’t want many pests in your home = yes.

If you don’t care and are not worried about termites = No

    cock roaches

Personally, Id be concerned about this.

      Makes sense, cheers

      • This question is like a shower thought, not sure what the ops end goal is.
Is he hoping the poll says no so he can use it to persuade his misso out of it?

I swear that is the motivation of at least 50% of forum posts lately

Posters: if I get enough confirmation bias feedback and votes on the poll in my favour I can take it back to the courts/council/ insurance company/ boss / police / workplace/ misso and overturn their decision/rules/law as ozbargain forum statistics l/ arm chair lawyers trumps all.

  • I think you can get separate termite treatment which is administered only on the exterior of the house?

For interiors I honestly just use a cheap can of surface spray once in a while. $2.99 at ALDI and allegedly lasts for 9 months! If I see a roach inside, then I will spray the corners, and voilà dead roaches will show up over the next week.

    • Thanks for the tip. I've been buying the equivalent Mortein which costs 3x more.

  • I agree with your partner. Spiders and roaches and stuff are foul and I wouldn't want to see a single one in home.

  • Inside the house, this is all you need or similer product (https://www.mortein.com.au/products/kill-protect-control-bom…)

I have a large garden and have seen termites wings fell on the grounds.

Don't need to have a large garden, can get from neighbours.

    leaving residues visible.

maybe you should change your pest controller

    • Yeah, 100% this. Pest control is good. But if they're leaving residue around, go for another company. I get mine done every year, and don't notice anything.

Just clean the house and don't leave food out, that's pest control with no cost or mess. Leave a few spiders and ants around for cleanup duty.

  • My feeling is that above pest control for insects is useful in instances where it’s localised for a specific pest. Mostly as long as you vacuum regularly, clean your floors, and don’t leave out food scraps you will probably find that cockroach activity is reduced. Ants are a bit different as if they can get into the home from a small opening, and into a kitchen area they might try and get into containers, but again they generally are kept at bay by keeping counters clean, and floors clean.

I used to spray my outside above ground walls and windows with a Bifenthrin concentrate but no longer do that because spiders are really important for insect control.

Also, depending on what chemical you use, you may get different results with residue. Some concentrates will leave a bit of a milky film. They all work to create a contact barrier where the insects come into contact with the poison and die. I’ve found that the cheaper premix stuff doesn’t leave as much of a residue, and is more watery. Whereas some of the pro stuff is more like wood glue consistency in the bottle, and then is thicker on application.

Termite control is important though, and because it’s underground generally doesn’t affect above ground invertebrates like bees, which AFAIK have been badly impacted by large scale spraying in other countries with newer generation chemicals like Fipronil.

I don’t have a particular issue with pests like cock roaches or spiders but my mrs thinks otherwise.

Spiders and cockroaches are not the same thing.

You won't have an issue with cockroaches until you do. Once you have an infestation, it means you literally have hundreds if not thousands of them in your walls. It's 10 times worse to get rid of them than it is to keep them away.

The minor inconvenience of regular and proper control for cockroaches is much better than the alternative.

Trust me on this, I speak from 1st hand experience with an infestation caused by an (profanity) neighbour.

  • I had a property that tenants brought pets into (against the rules). Ended up requiring 6 professional pest treatments. It was from a large company, but the technician who came out was shocked how many times was needed over a 3 month period to finally eradicate the fleas. After the 2nd treatment I would literally catch the fleas, squash them and seal them in sticky tape for the technician to see on his next visit. Paid for 1 treatment, received 6 in order to solve the issue. Well worth it.

  • This weekend I did a barrier spray. This morning I found ants eating something in my powder room. But no spiders or millipedes, so all good.

  • I’ve never had pest control, and don’t have cockroaches or spiders.
I’d be much more concerned about having poison residues on a surface I might touch.

  • indoor pest control is a bandaid solution because things are getting into your house. The pest control just means they will hopefully die in your house which is not a great solution.

I would rather DIY the pest control and spend the money on resolving how they are getting in your house.

  • A family member had termites. Repairs were about 100K.
