    Dont do it.

    • +6

For $2100 why not, cheaper than the parts

      • +8

Dell has a habit of using bespoke motherboards, and custom graphics cards, that can be relative arse.

        • +1

The motherboards yes, but reviews such as Gamers Nexus show that the graphics cards at least are a lot better than expected and are pretty decent. The motherboard though? Yeah that’s a disappointing part.

If I remember right, at least the power supply is also good.

          • @BillyG687: Yes but also proprietary so its not easily replaced or reused anywhere else in future

            • @Lonewolf1983: Only the mobo and case really, and out of those two the case is probably all you’d want to keep. The PSU I believe can be too, it’s just the newer 12v standard. The rest like CPU, RAM, GPU, memory absolutely can use used elsewhere.

              • @BillyG687: No it uses non standard cables for the power supply
                And the case thermally sucks

Only thing I'd do here is pull out the GPU, put something else in and sell it to someone who doesn't have a clue, which is who tends to buy alienware machines

        • the 4080 in this system is actually an alright card

    • Don't do it!

  • +9

These are universally panned, please do your research.

    • What does this term mean?

      • It means they are negatively reviewed by most reputable tech review outlets.

      • Gamers Nexus fans can only evaluate these at RRP

  • +5

Gamers Nexus has reviewed several of these eg. https://youtu.be/w8kprUGy57E?si=ZHH7Fb-qd705-_3p

  • +1

Let me get this straight, near $3 grand for 16gb of RAM, with a last gen processor ,and some off-brand dank ass OEM GPU cooler build?

    • +9

For $2388 post cashback you’re not going to find better specs tbh cheapest possible 4080 + 13700f is already $2200+

      • -3

it's a homebrew 4080 cooler though, and trash case / cooling solution. so whatever the case, you're getting -20% performance or something like that due to thermal throttling.

        • +6

In the Gamers Nexus video review the dell gpu cooler was fine and performed like a normal 4090, given it’s the same cooler and a 4080 in this build it will be just fine, stop pulling numbers out of nowhere

          • +1

@Kazusa: Well page 1, it isn't out of nowhere. I had a quick look at the latest review and it does appear the coolers have improved substantially from previous generations. Note, previous generations exist. It's like you're calling me out because Jeep finally made a good car part after multiple generations of failures and you can't understand why anyone would factor in a silly thing like 'brand reputation'.

      • Sure but alienware dont use a branded mainboard, powersupply, ram or prolly even the ssd. Some oem gpu with blower fan. Poor airflow..

        • +4

It is not a blower gpu, the oem ssd is probably from an actual big brand like Samsung/sk Hynix please do some research before posting

        • +2

You gotta at least recognise that Dell is one of the biggest PC makers. Their unbranded stuff is usually white label, mainstream memory manufacturers.

Their PSU’s are better than what’s required from what I recall. Same with the GPU, its reference design which a decent cooler on it.

When it’s “unbranded” in a Dell it’s typically mainstream brands but sold at massive volume and thus cheaper for it than any one of us could dream.

I don’t rate their build design choices, like motherboard, but yeah it’s not AliExpress unbranded level.

  • men of culture we meet again

  • Don’t think Shopback would work

    • +1

The 7% student discount is listed on the shopback page so it should work

  • Ram upgradable?

    • +1

Yeah like for $500 to upgrade to 2x 16gb DDR5-5200
      lols!

      • +1

        Just upgrade it yourself

        • True. Those gaming desktops from Dell should support XMP as well, so you don't event have to buy expensive and rare JEDEC kits.

  • +1

    Waiting for R16
    Buy new, not old

  • +7

At $2100, this is a bargain.

  • +5

This model has the god awful proprietary motherboard with the usbs soldered onto the front of it, don't expect to ever case swap. also power supply is non standard atx, and you don't even have a IO shield as it's built into the case but also doesn't matter cause they god awful proprietary mb size…even the older model i think R12 and before is better at least you can reuse the motherboard and other parts though the case had worse air flow at that point

    • +3

right so no different to any big OEM pre-built, at least they're using high quality PSUs unlike other deals that get posted

  • no AMEX offer, sad

    • why not?

      • Taegeted, just checked my AMEX account, no dell offer.

  • +10

at $2100, definitely a deal despite all the negativity.

but I have to pay $2788.69 and hope and finger crossed for shop back to give me 6%+$150
and i dont have AMEX offer
so actually not such a great deal

    • I just got ShopBack confirmation for 7% student discount applied, cashback 4% and $150 cashback through the challenge, plus Amex 10% cashback.

      • +2

        Why only 4% mate?

        • +1

Bought a G series laptop, not this.

  • +1

OP should consider update the title with the post CB price, this post deserves more upvotes IMO

If you don't want to or can't build a PC from scratch yourself, this is a good option. Don't worry about swapping proprietary Alienware components over to a different case etc in future, as technlogy will undoubtedly have moved on by then. Realistically you will be trying to transfer today's small and slow last-gen SSD, maybe your last-gen RAM and your last-gen GPU over to your new build in 2027/28, which will save you a couple of hundred dollars. Who cares about the bespoke leftover components (PSU, motherboard, case) when that happens?

If you like the specs and the price with cashback seems okay today, just buy it.

But I'd definitely recommend adding enough onsite warranty to survive the lifespan you expect to achieve. I've bought Alienware laptops and Dell Gaming laptops knowing I'll get 4-5 years out of them and can vouch for the excellent onsite service when it has been needed. Some of the regular Ozbargain discount PC shops will certainly offer cheaper or higher performance deals today, but they definitely won't stand by their products with onsite service for 5 years for just an extra couple of hundred dollars.

  • I recall seeing the AMEX Dell offer a few months ago.
I think my one has expired now?

Does anyone have a link to 10% off Amex ?

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/lp/student-laptops
    submission doesn't work?

      • Thanks, I had an earlier offer.
        Didn't get this one.

  • I wonder how reliable Shopback is?

    • +1

Doesn't always track, you have to contact them sometimes.

  • Pay the extra for liquid cooling and Warranty

Actually the CPU is already liquid cooled and the case now has 5x big ass fans inside it. Save $130
Just spend it on the most warranty you can afford.

  • the challenge seemed stopeed?

  • +1

    cash back increased to 10%

    • Hold off until bf?

      • +1

why not, plus also eyeing a 4090 machine, hoping it can be had for 3800 after all discount and cashback

  • +1

The student discount code doesn't seem to apply anymore on this model, it's listed under the exclusions on the Student Purchase Program page.

    AVOID
Despite all the negative reviews, I decided to buy an Alienware R15, because I'm not a hardcore gamer and just wanted something reliable and well built. Right out of the box on first boot I started having issues where it wouldn't connect to the internet which meant I couldn't setup Windows 11. I tried WAN/LAN/hotspotting nothing worked. Dell wanted me to download drivers, do this do that, I said I'm not doing anything to fix their crappy PC that doesn't even work out of the box and demanded a refund. So now I am back to square one with searching for a gaming pc.
