Buying Mobile Phone in France

I have just arrived in Paris and somewhere between Eurostar station and station near our hotel my phone disappeared. I think I may have put it on top of suitcase while I bought tickets for Metro or I missed my pocket or it was pickpocketed - I will never know.

I am here for another 6 weeks so I need to buy a new Android phone.

Will I be able to configure it so that all text will be in English and so that it has US keyboard?

If the phone has an eSIM will I be able to get one from Boost so I can receive authorization codes, etc?

Are there any other issues that I haven't thought about?

  • Will I be able to configure it for Whatsapp if I don't have my Oz SIM in it?

Whatsapp can't help you with that, you will have to obtain a new SIM card that has the same phone number, meaning you'll have to order a new SIM card. You might have to contact your telco provider and let them know your phone's lost or stolen and they'll de-activate the SIM for you and re-issue

Knowing it's Paris - pickpocket would be the most likely scenario.
Have you tried tracking it using the "find my device" function on your Google account?
Have you reported it to the police? You might need that to make a travel insurance claim (I hope you've bought one) or to get a replacement SIM?

    Back to your questions:
Yes, practically all smart phones support English, which you can select during initial set-up and in settings.

    • Oh yea, and have you reported your SIM as stolen to your Aussie telco?

The last time i went to Paris, i hugged my bagpack while so tight while walking around it felt that i was pregnant.

  • Sorry to hear OP

Yes you can change the keyboard to the US keyboard in settings, if that doesn't have it for whatever reason, download the Google keyboard app which I'm using now.

With Sim, maybe get a local number and get WhatsApp.

Hopefully you saved your contacts on your email on your previous phone, android good with that as most automatically saves it to your account.

  • You know what they call a mobile phone in France? Le Mobile Phone.

  • You were pickpocketed at Gare du Nord station. After the Eiffel Tower it is the most notorious spot for stealing. Queuing for Metro tickets is one of the hotspots for pickpockets

  • If you're worried about authorisation codes for making payments, you could try to sign up to Wise once you get your new phone.

My gf did it while we were in Europe and managed to get a virtual card on phone's wallet. She was able to transfer money from her bank into the wise wallet and then pay with her wise card without ever needing to enter a verification code from her Australian phone number. It didn't take long at all.

There was a setting in the wise app to turn off mobile verification. My memory is a little hazy on the details but you might be able to get it working. Fees are small and it's worth a shot.
