Best Wi-Fi Router under $50?

I want wifi in my shed which has a cable running from the ADSL2 connected house. I'm thinking a cheap router? Don't need the longest range as it's a small shed with no internal walls and at most I'd need the connection to extend a few metres outside. I'm not sure what's good or not with a router, what to look for. Appreciate the help.

    Find one from market place.

Literally any you can get for free from ewaste would probably be fine, unless you are seeking high performance.

If he already has an ethernet cable, no need for powerline.

I guess it depends on how the ethernet cable is run. If it's just laying across the ground, I'd prefer to use underground electrical cabling.

You don't want/need a router; look for an access point or an "extender" with an ethernet port.

Having said that, most routers can be just an access point, but setup may be more complex.

If you want the same ssid/password, get a mesh system, put one in the shed with the ethernet connected, and turn off your existing wifi.

As others said, for this range anything wiil be fine.

  • Thanks for the advice, i recenty gave away a box of old tech stuff id been hording for years there was modems and a wifi extender in there. Murphy's law at work, will keep my ear to the ground for cheapest solution. Would an old adsl modem do the job? I saw one for $10 on marketplace.

    • Terminology in this space is confusing. It's very unlikely just to be an ADSL modem these days… (how are you even still on ADSL? Isn't NBN everywhere, so you should be at least on FTTN/VDSL?)

Ultimately, if it has wifi, you can usually set it to a static IP on your network (e.g. if your normal router is 192.168.0.1, set it to 192.168.0.200 or something) and then connect an ethernet cable to one of its LAN ports (NOT the WAN port). But if you're not sure about what I just wrote, might be best to stick to buying an Access Point.

  • Cheers guys. Ended up going with the TP-Link TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router for $32 ex shipping based on reviews and price.
