$280 12TB Ironwolf, Legitimate? $300 Used 16TB Better Deal?

Is this a legit deal? Is it worth considering? Is it possible a used drive? I'm looking for something for a media server.

Edit:
Even though this is used it seems more honest:

Usually I'd assume harddrive on ebay at a good price = scam, every time.

However there have been 13 reviews over a couple of months on that specific listing and 61 sold, I'm half tempted to roll the dice on it.

I'm wondering if people have finally gotten over Chia and are flogging off drives. Odd to see so many for sale at once. User is in China, so don't trust that it's Australian based. Warranty would probably be a nightmare.

  • My scam alarm is triggered by the sellers name and similar accounts around.

    • I just realised I was looking at a mujitech4 and mujitech8, both selling harddrives. Might be some kind of rebadging of old drives and they're not really ironwolfs? Who knows

      • Beware: Could easily be warrantied rejects- fixed or no fault found.

Drives don't ship well, I'd judge the vendor first on their packaging, second on the drive's stats and longevity.

If its not fresh, no point saving a few pesos on spinning rust. It's just too fragile/subject to abnormally low MBTF (usually due to poor transit and packaging)

If the price is too good to be true, then it is too good to be true.

A quick google search shows they retail for over $400… and I don't think the margins on those things are very high. So whether you think $280 is a realistic price…

The Seagate links takes me to a 12TB not 14TB. Was this a typo on the seller's behalf which has now been fixed?

    • It was my mistake. (Oops username checks out.)

  • Update: Just bought the used one. Wish me luck!

Let us know how you go, and the results of a SMART test (I'm curious of the actual power on hours).

I've seen that Metrocom guy around, he sells on FB Marketplace directly for a bit cheaper too. Heavily tempted to buy one too.

      • 17355 hrs. or 2 years. hey it could be worse!

        • I just looked at the drive it's replacing 50000hrs not bad for an old Seagate expansion.

        • Hey! So were these drives brand new? Or second hand? I'm thinking of getting a couple… Would you recommend? Thanks

          • @other44: So they are second hand. Mine was showing 2 years of continual usage. Maybe not an amazing deal given some of the other options overseas, etc. although I'm a bit wary of buying a hard drive from overseas as I'm not confident about transit g forces and damage

Edit: I'm referring to the second link. By the way. I think the first link is probably fraud although 80 sold so who knows.
