Why not using FREE Google map?

    • Just back from 4 weeks driving around Italy using Google maps. Amazingly good including radar trap warnings

Amazingly good including radar trap warnings

Are they going to introduce that to the Australian version soon?

          Waze is your friend.

          • @StorminNorman: I know Waze does that, but Google Maps does better routing…

    • +2

Maybe it’s also free, nothing to lose and got offline map. Same features google maps doesn’t have.

      • +3

nothing to lose and got offline map

Google maps can be used offline too…

        • +1

Apple Maps as well since iOS17

    • Truck/bus/large vehicle routes.

    This deal requires payment selection

Today, Google maps recommended me a $7 toll road for a destination 1.5km away. (to save 4 minutes)

    • +1

Use Waze and choose “always avoid tolls”?

      • -5

On a recent trip, Waze wanted me to pay $7 tolls and drive an extra 10km on eastlink just to save 1 minute !!! travelling a more direct route.

    • -2

      It's true!

Kings Cross to 456 Kent st.

    • +8

Google Maps also clearly suggests alternative non-tolled routes when you search a destination, and even lets you disable toll routing completely. Anymore non-issues you want to whinge about?

    • +2

You can turn off using toll roads with three clicks

    • +1

How can you save 4 minutes to go 1.5km? The entire drive would be less than that right?

      • Not through Sydney CBD. Depending on which streets and time of day, 1.5km could easily take 20-30 minutes.

    • Skill issue.

remember the days when tomtom was a $70 app in the app store and we were forced to buy it if you wanted a nav

    • +3

Yes. Because I paid for it.

Same as I paid for RunKeeper in the early iPhone days before it became freemium 💩

    • And then we found Metroview!

      • Is that still around?

        I don't think I've received an update for a while…

        • Yep had a TomTom XL GPS unit back in 2007.

Wow, I'm on the beta program for Metroview from back in 2016 and according to the Google Play Beta Tester site the last update to the app was 24/8/2023 and the maps were updated Q3 2023 !!!

Might be time to reload it (though you really don't need a GPS Nav app if you live in Hobart Tasmania ;P )

          • @Limbot:

you really don't need a GPS Nav app if you live in Hobart Tasmania

Yep, I've travelled all 12 roads there.

I remember when it was a chunky 4inch screen that cost $200 and fell off my windscreen in the QLD summer, with a kiwi narrator on it who had the best kiwi pisstake accent, to the extent I suspected he was Aussie pretending to be kiwi.

    I remember the days Tomtom
was cr@cked on my Nokia 6660 with the bluetooth SiRF Xtrac III GPS dongle(fancy name, I know)…

I remember buying a cheap no name GPS from Wow Sight & Sound. It was running Windows CE under the hood, so you could install a cracked copy of Tomtom over the crappy include GPS app.

    • +2

In 2007/2008, Tomtom was on my Hp PDA with a Nokia Bluetooth GPS receiver. Saving much time when did pizza delivery in North Sydney area when my mates using map books.

Seems to be unobtainable due to payment and address issue (if you use PayPal or Gpay, I didn't try the card).

    • Used a fake US address + wise card. Works for me.

  • can i cancel after subscribe to keep the 12 months, i dont want to end up forgetting and getting charged next year

    • Use wise, get a temporary card to start the subscription (free). After subscribing, discard the card. Worked for me.

      • Tried to open a wise account, it requires me to send $30. Can I transfer the money out later?

        • Yes. Or you can just use the virtual wise card as a debit card and spend the $30.

        • Yes as it is just an initial deposit. Once open, you don’t need to keep the $$ there.
Also if you want a digital Visa, you need to pay $10 for a physical first. Once paid, you can create virtual cards i.e. no need for physical to arrive.

    I wish I kept my Nokia Navigator…

  • Completed sign up step however unable to do step 3 sign in to app. Using iOS. Anyone else manage to figure out this step?

    • Sign-in to 'TomTom Services' via 'Settings'

      • Not possible to go beyond the main splash screen, there is no settings cog or button visible in iOS just to sign up for free trial or pay for annual subscription, there is no way to login so to speak.

        • There is a Restore Purchase option on the page where there is free trial, that is where you can log in

My experience with the app since getting this offer yesterday. Took ages to load and download the maps to begin with, then with my commute this morning, again took quite some time to start the app while connected to Android Auto, couldn't find my work address so put in an address near work it could find. On my route, I found no way to avoid tolls like I can for google maps. About 5 minutes in switched back to google maps and deleted this as soon as I got to work. Will be cancelling my subscription now.

OP mentions benefits over Google Maps but unfortunately, not enough to get me to switch. Also can't use voice commands in my car with Tom Tom like I can with google maps.

Good stuff. In short, don't bother grabbing :-)

  • TomTom sell your data to the authorities, where they used the data to install speed cameras.
