Most Affordable Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena DOP

I'm looking for the most affordable Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena DOP or Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Reggio Emilia DOP, the pure grape must stuff if anyone has any suggestions/ sales? (Not the cheaper IGP stuff watered down with vinegar).

  • Just googling the cheapest is about $120 to $130 for 100ml. I mean if this is some good stuff that seems pretty afforable. That is the whole point of a DOP status, to have the right to sell you at an inflated price point. Any cheaper than average you are probably dealing with a fake.

  • I've never seen it in Australia, it's always been watered down with wine vinegar. Costco have a good product at about 20 dollars for a litre, which will do until you are next in Italy, or on a stopover at one of their airports.

    • Thinking back now I think even the stuff that I bought in Rome for a hundred or so euros was cut with some vinegar although it was very thick. Italian ingredients in Italy are usually very accessible to the average person, there isn't the same (marketing) culture of expensive rarified ingredients that plague the middle classes of Australia. I'm sure a lot of the products they send overseas in tiny bottles would bemuse a lot of Italians.

      • If anyone is interested in the ongoing conversation about Italian food it is worth reading the magazine of the academy of Italian Cuisine. It is very well translated into English, available free of charge and is really a very stylish and provocative publication.
