This device does stream, it has an ethernet port to connect it to your network.
    Description should say: Not WiFi

    • +1

Changed the title just in case
The description does say 'not streaming' which means it is not the newer wifi version.

      • +2

Thanks for updating the title, but I'm not sure you understand the difference between 'streaming' and 'wireless'. This device does stream.
Here is some interesting reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media

If you want to differentiate it from the wifi version, you can do so by stating "not wireless" or "not wifi". Instead you've described it as not having a capability that it does have.

As per the product description on the page you've linked to:
Connect to Internet sites like YouTube, Flickr, Live365 or stream content from your home network.

I think you're mistaking the use of the word "streaming" here. It's part of the noun WD use to name their slightly higher spec model of this device. That higher model is called the "WDTV Live Streaming".

So while this base model does, in fact, stream media over your network, it is not the model called "WDTV Live streaming". This model not having wifi and the higher model having wifi isn't why the OP is pointing out it is "not streaming", it's the name.

          Oops, I'm sorry. My bad.

Thanks, I knew I wasnt an idiot or something

          All good

  • The newer WIFI-Enabled version goes for around $99 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81239

So if you want wifi I'd just get that, though I suppose you can get wifi working on the older model for less. Apart from this they are pretty much the same internally I think.

  • The WiFi version is worth the extra.
This model hasn't had an update for over a year now and my struggle with some files.

    • Updates should have nothing to do with issues certain files. If in the past if it played a specific container and codec it should do so now

This one is actually better with custom firmware. Blows the wifi one out of the water.

    • Had mine for well over a year and handles absolutely everything you throw at it. A fantastic bit of kit. Plugged a dongle in the USB port for Wi-fi connectivity and it works for most files but did experience some lag issues.

    • They're still active with firmware updates.
There was a firmware update a week or so ago, though it was removed because of some issues.

Much worse than the Chinese ones, which can customize firework, operate under Android system, and connect to a wide range of free content streaming.

Would not consider WD for that type of products.

    • Not sure what WD product you have used before, but i have used this product(with a USB wifi $13 from MSY) and it has never missed a beat, and has played everything i can through at it and can use online stream services.

    • +3

i aam not sure where you got your chinese one… but last i checked, firework are still illegal to be used?

  • I remember when this first came out and I bought one on special for $200…

Same when i bought my 94 Camry. I wish i waited 18 years.

      • Yeah I had one of the WDTV liveHD models for a week and then got rid on eBay. The main issue for me was the Internet radio thru the Tunein and Shoutcast apps, only mp3 live streams, not WMA, not AAC+. Not a lot of good for anyone who wants a decent sound. So I bought an android Chinese media player off eBay, lets you download most of the apps you'd use on a smartphone and more customisable to.

      • +3

You got a Camry for $200!!!!!

        • Sarcastic… LOL…

  • Good price.
I've got a couple of these and they do (of course) stream, and they can do so wirelessly with the addition of a USB wireless adaptor.

This or the Apple TV for $99?

    • I'd love for either of these (or a similar priced device) to natively run a Plex client.

  • +1

Ive had one of these for nearly 2 years now and its one of the best purchases i have made…. and at this price its a steal

  • This box + WDLX custom firmware = Awesome :)

I started a thread over at Whirlpool about it just over a year ago - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1759007

    • Does the custom firmware allow you to use netflix?

  • Mp4 with x264 codec. Argh!! Help me play them please?

    • What is the problem you're having?

Both my hacked and unhacked version of this product play MP4 with x264 every day…

      • It doesn't play half the episodes of Awkward. :(
Ps3 plays them, but not the wdtv.

        Just says they are corrupted.
Did it with game of thrones as well

        Only mp4 issues

Mkv and Avi are all fine otherwise…

        • I play that type of file all day every day. What are you playing them off? If your playing them off a NAS (media server) then strangely enough if that doesn't support the file type then it wont play it. I downgraded my NAS software to check a few things out, MP4s wouldn't play on that version, upgraded the software again and then they played again. Had nothing to do with the WDTV

        • USB into the wd TV and a NAS.
Weird… will need to investigate it then.

  • does anyone know if this one can play RMVB files? perhaps after upgrading to custom firmware?

    • +1

No, it can't play them and they don't plan to support that format.

  • +1

Love mine but wish it could read exFat drives.

  • I have one of these with the latest (WD) firmware.
Struggles with alot of 720p rips especially if they have ac3 or 5:1 etc.
Seomtimes its jumpy, frames are dropped/glitchy, or sometimes it stops randomly during play.

Would custom firmware increase codec compatibility/performance?

Still better than anything bar a media PC for me.

    • are you sure it is not your connection speed, wifi maybe? I can play 1080P rips over gigabit network from N40L with no issues (although I am not sure what sound they are encoded with).

    • I can stream 14 gb mkv no problem .

      Mp4 is my issue

  • +1

This unit has wireless support if you use the right dongle, I got this one

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRENDnet-TEW-644UB-300M-802-11n-W…

If works great, but it is too big for the rear USB, so I took of the casing and shoved it inside the unit itself and used a USB extension cable to plug it in.

Heres a list of other compatible dongles

    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3805#wireles…

  • Ok, so I am looking for a media player without WiFi. (I wont be playing anything directly off my laptop hdd.)
I use an external HDD that has a large amount of movies ripped in mkv and vob format. My LG "smart" TV wont recognize them, so I need a mediaplayer to help me play those files on my TV.

Would this be a good player for me? Good price for what I need?

    • +1

yeah this will do quite well
