Duty and Processing Fee by Fedex/ DHL

Hi
I want to buy a watch on Chrono24 and get it sent to Australia. Would anyone know approximately how much / what percentage, on top of the 10% GST, I could expect to be charged by the courier company? I couldn't find this info on the carriers' pages.

Thanks

You're going to be up for duty as well. It's a percentage rate that various according to the class of goods. Australian Customs website had a pretty good FAQ last time I imported anything.

Plus add $50 charge by FedEx / DHL for the process of collecting the charges. Usually most often triggered when the value of the items is >= $1000, or specific types of items. (If I order parts from o/s over $1000 I'll sometimes break it up into smaller orders if possible - not just to get rid of the charge but to expedite the process by not having to deal with the forms / payment which can slow things down by a day or two.)

Sending via mail means bypassing this charge, sometimes even the duties and GST too, but with the risks of untracked delivery - great for low value items, not so good with higher value items.

No duty on watches so just GST plus fees from the courier. Generally allow 15% on top of the purchase price and you should be right.

  • There's duty from a lot of countries, but research which ones don't have duty.

    Every country has GST payable.

Then the handler charges an admin fee to do a import declaration.

  • I mean I bought the Odin 2 with DHL and it didn't get any customs or tax.

I recently imported something via DHL (not watch or electronics).

    I was charged the following:
    1) Duty - which was 5% for my product. It was charged on the (product cost + freight cost).
    2) GST - 10% charged on total (product + freight + duty)
    3) Additional Australian govertment charges - I did not really understand what it was for.
    4) DHL disbursement fee - it was $22 in my case.

All in all, I ended up paying 19% on top of product + shipping cost that I had agreed with the seller.

Again, this can differ between different product types, country of origin, etc.

  • If the cost is over A$1000 Don't know the duty cost, but gst will apply plus $88 custom charge plus $20 for DHL or $0 for FedEx.

  • Thanks everyone!
