Alternative Provider to OPTUS Which Did Not Provide 000 Service during Last Most Recent Outage?

I was most disturbed to read that OPTUS did not provide any triple zero access during their last outage.
This is an unconscionable service. 228 people tried to access 000 during the outage and OPTUS seem to think that because they did a follow up "Welfare Check" on those affected that was best business practice! Too little too late!

Not sure I believe their stats and how many others called it and relied on neighbours to get them the service they needed or were in ICU and could not be contacted by OPTUS?

Anyone got any ideas on alternative? I use Aussie Broadband because I think it is more ethical to use Autralian call centre staff to answer my queries but they use Optus as their provider. Thanks for your input

I think Aldi Mobile is a great option and offers Telstra 4G and 5G network, data sharing, and Wi-fi calling so you can call home while you are overseas like a normal phone call

By the way, I'm no expert but just so you have more complete information, the issue with Triple Zero may not be purely Optus' fault and there will be a further investigation. Calls to Triple Zero are supposed to use whatever network is up and running and that didn't happen (News report)

The Optus landline network went down as well. Not clear from that article where the triple zero calls where made from

I think the outage was such that the cell network was available, but they calls couldn't be routed. So the handset didn't fail over to a different network as it would if Optus was turned off.

  • I have my phone and internet with More. They also offer I think its 25% off plans for Commonwealth customers.

I dont think there are any other phone companies but Optus. I'll try google.

  • 228 people tried to access 000 during the outage

I still can't believe this isn't a bigger part of this story. What if someone died as a result? do we even know?

‘Worst ever’: Optus coverage fails again
Optus customers in one major city have woken up to little or no coverage again just two weeks after a 12-hour national outage.

  • You realise this was for landlines only? Mobile phones have the ability to use any network for emergency calls so were not affected.

Calls to 000 from mobiles are meant to connect to another available network (in this case Telstra or Voda) if the network you subscribe won't connect you. One theory about the failed Optus 000 calls is that in those cases the towers were operating enough to give a signal (but without the ability to make a successful call) and because an Optus signal was detected the fallback to Telstra or Voda did not happen. If all that is true, the 000 fall back mechanism clearly needs some work.

Thanks for your input, Ponsonby. That is precisely why I no longer have any faith in Optus.

I think that the 000 availability is legislated for all mobile phone providers so their inability to maintain this service is a major inadequacy and that is why I used the word "unconscionable"in relation to Optus' service delivery.

Unconscionable is an adjective that means without a conscience; unscrupulous; so unfair or unjust that it shocks the conscience. The adjective is frequently used in the context of contract law for contracts that have grossly oppressive and unfair terms.

What about at risk customers who live alone and need an emergency service when Optus landline and mobile 000 services were not working as they are legally supposed to? Smoke signals are not effective these days!
