JB Education Warranty - Worth It?

Hi, like many others we're looking at the BYOD device for Year 7. The school has a JBedu portal which they were pushing. Usual assortment of $1350 Lenovo, $1500 & 250p HP, $1500&2400 surface laptops. But the big thing they're pushing is the 3yr warranty & break/fixes on the school campus (by the IT guys) including accidental damage (2-3 of these per policy ) for around $180-$250/device.

Normally I'd run a mile from any extended warranty. But knowing kids and their friends (or enemies) I'm wondering if maybe it is a good idea? Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with this? I was half tempted to buy 2 x 2nd hand Laptops and do my own swap over if needed.

and of course, a rugged case is probably the best insurance.

Cheers

Accidental damage is different from extended warranty. That’s closer to insurance, and worth considering.

    • It's an all-in-one. Extended warranty (if manufacturers don't already offer it)& accidental damage.

      • Yeah, I’d think of the real value as being in the accident insurance, same as for AppleCare+. In that context I wouldn’t be too salty about also getting a superfluous extended warranty.

        • absolutely. The line they were selling is that the school's IT can fix most problems (as JB give them common spares), and they give students a loan one. if they needed part they'd be couriered the next day for repair.

Part of me thinks that's handy & easy. If only laptops came with the Ipad TPU kids rugged cases.

  • Extended warranty is worthless, you are protected by the ACL, however accidental damage insurance is a different thing all together, you may or may not need it depending if you have home and contents insurance or not and what your gap is.

  • I had similar experience - we bought MacBook Air for my son as required by his school. Fortunately we have extended warranty (the school's partner) and for us, it was worth because one day he left his laptop on the classroom floor and hsi friend step on it and break the screen. We still pay the excess (about $200), but it was way cheaper than bringing it to Mac authorised repair centre.

    • yep, quite a few people have said something along those lines. apart from my kids mistreating, it's the other kids who just trash things as a bit of a power play, is what worries me, as there's often zero consequences.

But I was wondering if the insurance and repairs are actually all they're cracked up to be.

  • I went on the JB Education Portal. The price of the Ipads on there were MORE expensive than standard JB Hifi at the moment…

    • yeah it's a bit like TGG Commercial. they're usually cheaper unless there's a sale.
