Telstras Pre-Paid iPad SIM to tether from iPhone to laptop??

Ok just after some information if this is possible.
I took advantage of the $10 sim pack deal from coles.
I want to use this sim purely for data.
I do not own an ipad. I called up and activated the sim as an ipad to take advantage of the 3gb of data only offered for the ipad plans.
I then then cut the sim down to mirco size and put it in my iphone.
So i would like to know if it is possible to then use the iphone's hotspot feature and tether the iphone to my toshiba laptop so i can surf the net on my laptop (or pehaps my android tablet even)?
Can this be done? Or will my data rates change?
Thanks hope someone can help!

  • I don't know for sure because I've never actually tried/experienced it, but I believe it depends on if the provider is actually detecting your use as being via the ipad (which technically they can do). Telstra have Ipad-only sim plans which they do limit to only via ipad.

If you don't get an answer to this then your options are:
    a) Call the support line of the provider
    or
    b) Try to tether and if it works, do some small downloads (maybe 5MB) and wait until the next month to see what the charges/usage are. Or if they have an online/realtime data/usage monitor you can check that.

    hope this helps

  • if you have a login to the telstra "MYPortal" website, you can check usage there.

    Or this link specifically.

I just went through all this with them…
Fact:= If you use it in your iphone and tether, you do not get the 3GIG.
What I did is called telstra and said I purchased it and was told at coles I could use it for 3gig of data on my iphone. Telstra took 10min telling me its not going to happen but I kept telling them thats what they told me when I bought it.
They manualy gave me 3gig on top of the 400mb plus $220 of calls you would usually get with a $30 sim.
    Good luck!
Oh and the $220 can be used as data when your data runs out at $2 per Mb (yes really)
Another plus is download the foxtel app posted a few days ago and once your credit expires, you can keep watching foxtel free for a month!
(foxtel app doesnt count data for telstra prepaid)

  • Ah, the beauty of complaining!
