Is There a Free .PST Repair Tool?

Scanpst isn't working (an unexpected error prevented access to this file) but I need to repair the .pst file. Didn't want to spend money on something that will only get used once and was wondering if there a freeware tool that might help? Google only come up with limited/trialware.

Or maybe a link to an updates scanpst.exe? The current version is 2011, running outlook 2007 (yes, I know. :( )
Thanks

  • if you need to scan pst and it is important pay up$$

  • outlook 2007

    Yikes.

Please tell us you have at least Win 10 and functional Defender or antivirus, otherwise there's a good reason why scanpst isn't working and you have bigger problems.

    • Yes has windows 10 and up to date AV.

      • Still a good chance you had a dodgy add-in or malware. Killing that tool is common to make it harder to get rid of it.

        • Maybe but I couldn't find anything after an AV/Malwarebytes scan? Anyway, after I copied the repaired file back it all works again.
          Cheers

  • Hmm OK I copied the .pst onto another PC with a more up to date scanpst.exe and that seemed to scan and fix errors. Not much else we can do I guess.

    • ok. now that everything is back to normal …

      don't forget to backup.
are you including your .pst (+ other outlook files, rules/etc) in your weekly backups???

presume you are using SMTP/POP for your current email access.
have you looked at switching to IMAP (or even exchange)?

and outlook 2007 - I'm currently on 2013 … and even that feels like it's past its used-by date.

Personally - I'm looking at making switch to IMAP very soon …
esp. since just got a new phone - so want email synched between phone + computer, no matter which one I view it on.

      • Thanks for that, it's actually someone else's PC. I have suggested all of the above, well see. :)

        • +1

          Ok.

IMAP is the way that things are done these days.
By that … it means that ALL emails are stored on the server (hence no matter whether you access VIA computer or phone) == 100% same.

I am still living in the age of dinosaurs … as I still use SMTP/POP … but then use a convoluted way of making it work across 2 devices.

As said though - I'm personally looking at changing to IMAP very soon.

Is your friend that you are helping … eg. older people.
eg. 1 device access only - in some ways may be best to leave on SMTP/POP.

Just be aware some NBN providers are playing around with settings …at some stage may need to change the actual DNS/IP address … or even change security settings for how it works.

My parents also use SMTP/POP for email as well … although had to recently change NBN/provider settings in email program to keep it working.

SMTP/POP - is starting to get pushed to the "unused / old-tech pile" … just saying.
