Looking for a Long Term Laptop - Budget $1,500

Hi OzBargainers, I am a Mac user but my mother is after a Windows PC.

I am computer savvy but unsure of what is out there on the market. She is looking for a laptop that can be used to work from home. Budget is $1500 or less. I was looking at the Lenovo Yoga 7i 14" i7 16GB 512GB on sale currently for $1497 at Officeworks and Lenovo direct. The laptop seemed to have it all. I just want to make sure it will last more than a couple years.

Any other recommendations out there to check out? Looking for something soon with all the Black Friday sales around.

Cheers.

  • I suggest T, P and X series of the Lenovo ThinkPad lineup. They are better built than consumer level laptops. If you are a student, you will have access to their education store which offers a decent discount. My X230 lasted 6 years and my X280 is still my primary work laptop.

I don't think that's been true for several years now.

  • Nobody can predict the future. How would we know how many years a PC will last. But I still prefer the flexibility and generalisable-ness of x86 vis-a-vie Apple’s ARM.

If you're doing tech support, suggest you sell her on Mac OS

All laptops are pretty crap these days, it's a gamble if you'll get more than a couple years out of one. Most shit is soldered and glued in, so it's not like they're easily fixable or upgradable any more.

You didn't mention what she actually needs the laptop for, so if she just needs to use office and word, get her a cheap piece of crap and replace it every 2 years, or get an old optiplex if it's just going to sit at her desk at home.

Get an M1/M2 Macbook Air for her and call it a day. Don't see any need for a Windows laptop unless she's got very specific programs that don't run on MacOS? Should be snappy and work well for everything she'd need, easy for you to troubleshoot, and not much maintenance required.

  • Is Lenovo a back to base for a warranty claim, is back to base Malaysia?

  • Highly recommend going a business grade laptop. If you like Lenovo something like a thinkpad, or Dell Latitude.

I use something very similar to this 7000 series Latitude for work and it’s great. Solid build quality, feels premium, keyboard is nice to type on, and if you it comes with 3 years warranty including onsite tech support.

It is refurbished, there are new options available in the 5000/3000 series which won’t be quite as premium feeling but should still be solid and reliable.

  • Rock solid lifebooks are the way to go for that budget i reckon

  • Asus Zenbook 14", available from computer shops like Umart and Centre Com. A range of configs available.
