XP VM Game suggestions

After several failures to get games working at LANs I have started work on an XP VM with games installed, patched, modified, etc and known to work.

I have no problems buying multiple copies of games to support this, but DRM must not get in the way of installing the game once on the VM then copying multiple times. Online not required (LAN only).

Steam games are out as you'ld need a different account for each copy.

GOG games are brilliant and are in.

Also working:
Starcraft
Warcraft 3
UT2004
Quake 2
Doomsday (doom/heretic/hexen)
IWD2

Anyone done something like this before? Ideas as to other games that work in this environment?

  • I haven't tested this but I'm willing to bet that Quake3/Quake4 and Age of Empires 2 would work fine once you add the nocd cracks. To be honest I stopped religiously playing games that came out after Quake 3… big Quake fan here and nothing has really interested me since :(
Question though.. Most [all?] of the above games should work fine on Win7, even with networking. I know Quake2 works because I still regularly have LANs at home with brothers/friends on win7[32/64bit] boxes - what's your reasoning for the xp vm?

    • 1: Windows 7 doesn't support IPX
2: Having to get people to actually install, patch, crack, find the work around for 64 bit systems, etc is a giant pain.
3: People install different mods/patches and break compatibility on what was once a known good game.
4: Sometimes we go through all of this and conclude that the game is just broken and give up.

For reasons I still do not understand WC3 has decided to stop working on my windows install (works just fine in the VM).

Quake 3: I'm more a Q2 person myself, and this wouldn't even need a cdcrack, but: 1: we don't play it much and 2: Quake Live is pretty easy/reliable.

Quake 4: Quake 2 with a new coat of paint! A bit meh on this one.

AoE 2: Never really got into this series, but open to it. You have had success in cracking this game?

  • What VM client are you using and what's the performance like?

    • VMWare Player, the performance is excellent. Games such as Soulstorm, UT2004 work perfectly.

  • My Favorite game app hereā€¦
    Gravity Guy
    Angry Birds
    Fruit Ninja
    Kingsoft Battery Doctor
    Dropbox
    iStunt 2
