Say someone got really bad allergies and is taking hayfever related medication, we talking 1 tablet everyday for the next 20-30 years. Is there any known long term side effects?

  • Should be fine unless you're taking first gen antihistamines. Even then the side effects are pretty mild. You're not taking corticosteroids for severe hay fever yeah?

    • don't first gen antiH put you to sleep? or is that only some of them

    Which medication specifically?

    • Any antihistamines I guess

Nope. Over the counter newer antihistamines like Telfast, Claratyne, Zyrtec, are very safe. Lots of people (including me) have taken them daily for decades with no side effects. Some people get a bit of dry eye/nose with some of them, in which case you should try changing brands.

The older ones are also safe but they will make you drowsy. If you are worried about getting the right one, check with the chemist.

If your doctor has prescribed oral corticosteroids, they are very powerful and can have bad side effects. But if you are taking those your doctor should have warned you about the side effects.

  • I got really bad hay fever when I was a child then in my teens got worse and worse..

I used to go through 2 boxes of tissues per day! Tissues up my nose to block the snot. I ain't exaggerating it and pills didn't work for me…. Sudafed, claritine etc… all didn't work. I was miserable and one day I had suicidal thoughts cause how bad it was.

Doctors face me prescription pills, one worked for like 1 month and I was cured but it came back. My body got used to it.

Then another doctor recommended this prescription nasal spray. https://m.indiamart.com/proddetail/avamys-nasal-spray-467424…

It worked!!! 2 sprays a day, then 1 spray a day, then 1 every 2 days and so on….

My hay fever was completely gone after 3 weeks, I stopped taking the spray after 2 months and I never had hay fever for like 8 months. Some how the spray did something in my nose.

I get hay fever every now and then but only got 1 week of respraying, my hayfever symptoms are gone.

It's the best cure and medicine and I recommend that spray to everyone with hay fever. It's a god send.

I rarely use tissues now and I can go about my life not worrying about hay fever.

I agree with this, Avamys is fantastic. Better to get it from your GP though not online.

And to OP's original question, you shouldn't use Avamys every day for years, because it's a steroid. It's great for using once in a while during a flare up like you do.

After reading about the Indian cough syrup deaths https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-63226055
I think I will stick to locally provided medications, rather than an overseas chemist website.

Its just a link, lol. Available locally

    • Ok I will give it a go for sure thanks

  • I'd ask the pharmacist next time you're in. Pretty sure they're incredibly safe, bigger issue would be any other drugs or health issues.

  • Safe to take, but ‘non drowsy’ on some isn’t as good as others and the response varies with individuals. Try first before you need to drive, operate an angle grinder etc. You also ‘get used ‘ to brands so change every now and then.
Something that works for me when I have itchy eyes along with other hay fever symptoms is to take the eyedrops with the anti-histamine and make sure you let the drops swill around in your eyes for plenty of time. It helps with the sneezing etc as well.
My theory (which I have which is mine) (which may be complete BS…🤷‍♂️) is that the fine blood vessels around the eye absorb some of the active chemicals and you get a dose through that as well.

  • You don't know until you try.

Honestly I just try to buy the most recently invented antihistamine meds.

The list of potential side effects are available online or with the medicine information provided in the box.

The only thing I care about is paradoxical drug side effect, a la developing allergy from anti-allergy medication (which is more common than you think). Think anaphylaxis from a drug you were expecting to prevent such a thing.

  • My chemist said I should not use all the time. They can have long term side effects like dementia. Talk to your chemist.
