Shopping Experience with Rayban for Sunglasses

Background

I made a purchase of Sunglasses from Ray Ban official site in Australia and made payment to them in AUD.
The purchase went ahead and the Item was shipped to me.

Shipping

I received the tracking number from DHL. To my surprise the item was not shipped locally from Australia.
The product Origin was: CHINA, PEOPLES REPUBLIC – DONGGUAN
Well not expected but no concerns as well.

Issue

DHL sent me an email asking me to provide a copy of my passport. This seems ridiculous, I am just buying a pair of sunglasses.
I am not comfortable handing out my passport scanned copy to them just to receive a pair of Sun Glasses.
Especially in a age where ID thefts are ever so common.

Attempt at resolution

I contacted the Ray Ban support who resolved my issue by cancelling my order.

Expected Outcome

I did not buy from overseas, I bought it from Ray ban Australia and paid it in AUD. It should not be the customers concern where the Item is shipped from and to manage the customs clearance.

RayBan as a corporate entity should internally clear the customs and ID requirement and then engage the customer only to ship it to them.

I recently bought a pair from their Australian website too, and saw it was coming from China via DHL. I wasn’t asked to provide a passport for it to clear customs. Looking at the shipping tracker it has cleared customs and is out for delivery today.

tell them you don't have a passport?

This is usually the case. I have ordered with RayBan and shipping would be from international delivered by dhl, without and local import duties / tax etc. Maybe something went wrong with your order?
Also DHL these days are rubbish!

Try myer they'll proabably have the same price, or a sunglass hut instore for pickup. But if you order from sunglass hut it's going to come from the same place. I'm pretty sure it's all coming from luxxotica who basically has a monopoly on the market, similar to de beers with diamonds.

It's called drop shipping. They are doing it to save money.

Your first mistake was buying overpriced plastic sunglasses that cost a few dollars to make.

  • I also recently bought a few pairs (total coming to approximately $500) and I wasn't asked to provide my passport to DHL. Weird.

  • I ordered a Rayban a few months ago and it also got shipped from China. It felt weird, but I wasn't asked to provide a passport copy

  • Very odd. I can understand the discomfort in providing a copy of the passport.
Try Bupa Optical (Black Friday discount might still be available). I got a few pairs for about $125 including Bupa Health Insurance and Black Friday discounts. Two pairs already delivered.

  • Ordered a custom pair during the last click frenzy, delivered by DHL from Treviso, Italy within a week of ordering. No ID requested.

  • Good to know - thanks for sharing. If I have the option, I'll be sure to buy from Sunglasses hut. Often their sales seem to match.

    • Because they are both owned by Luxottica.

      • I think you missing my point - sunglasses ship from AU - or at least mine came from AU.

  • You sure it was the official site? Lots of fakes out there. I've bought a few times and even returned some with no issues. Actually quite impressed with the quick deliveries.
