Heads Set To Roll At Harvey Norman After Massive Online Crash, As Chairman Slams Critics

Further to a previous post. As close ozbrs know I was a long term employee, and any posts I made sometimes got me banned because of my association with hn.
Hn made numerous changes to staff hours/jobs earlier this year. I was earning $420 a week and I was making more money on menulog, doing less hours. Since I left, I went to a store and was given the cold shoulder. I have been treated badly on a another matter, but I'll leave that alone.
I met gh several times, never smiles etc

I have seen a few of your posts before OP and it gives me the impression you aren't of sound mental health (not an insult).

HN may have treated you poorly and that always sucks when an employer does that but I suggest you put it all behind you. Don't even shop there. Move on with your life and try to save your hard earned menulog money.

    Article title:

Heads Set To Roll At Harvey Norman After Massive Online Crash, As Chairman Slams Critics

    Damn, 14 hour outage.

It's pretty funny considering that he was saying Australians were being to hard on the Optus CEO and execs.

  • Haha .
His obsequious defence of the Optus CEO gimp was a portent for his own greedy IT meltdown. If nothing else Gerry has a crystal ball. I wonder if he's had a vision to snatch it,yet?

    As for Guybrush>

"gives me the impression you aren't of sound mental health (not an insult)." It was.IMHO
Let the OP paint his own truth, his way.

If you've had such negative experiences with HN and GH why would you go searching for such articles?

Just ignore the business all together and move on.

    • *altogether

      • What a good idea, what OzBargainers and the rest of humanity should do as a whole, all together is… ignore the (ix)*tard and move on.

ix: Insert your choice of descriptor/expletive
        * and I'm not talking about the OP.

        • Articles still show up on my news feed.
Probably a good idea to remove it.

@BewareOfThe Dog: We're all victims of the Internet (or rather, how an increasingly select few, use it, to abuse us).

Control your consumption, rather than the have it happen the other way around, life will improve.

  • $420 a week and no one comes in that's wise, not a bad gig if you're doing the dole too!
Aircon big tv's to look at, and a lunchroom you might be better off doing less than signing a form each week

    $420

I can't tell if people do this deliberately anymore.

    • +5

I've mentioned 420 69 times in November alone.

I was going to say this was one of the only times ever I was not going to comment ‘nice’

      • +1

I did actually feel guilty mentioning it this case, but there are just some things that must be done.

I have a friend who worked at hn for years, with low pay, in my opinion, for the skills and effort they delivered.
If I was hiring at JB or similar I’d be targeting the hn high achievers for good skills and work ethic in a bad environment. It’s not like the good ones are looked after.

    • The commision selling PCs was pretty good though.

  • Retail sales just isn't the place to make decent coin anymore, I'm glad I left when JB purchased GG, the commission went out the window !!

    Edit oh it's this user…

How can you even live post your Gerry days?

  • I stopped going to HN years ago cause of that old man smell in the stores

I guess Gerry does visit all the stores

For sure the only reason it went down was because HN IT and eCommerce are incapable of flat out doing what GH prescribes when he calls a meeting over a glass of whiskey, and between poker games.

Like ad agencies, marketing pros, they are all idiots, the whole damned lot of them!

    • Would not be surprised if GH shares the same ,or connected somehow, IT contractor or systems as Optus.

The govt needs to reform laws so companies alert customers in real time, when shit hits IT fans. Time matters.

      • There is a public vendor relationship certainly. No overlap of IT function/suppliers AFAIK.

For years HN eCommerce site was less than useless, it was Maq Bank (JB and TGG) that forced him to start spending seriously on his online storefront. It's now only as awful as the rest of the business.

Pretty embarassing for them, but my impression of Harvey Norman's main demographic is that they are not strong internet users. However it is a demographic that still has money for appliances and furniture, since many have paid off their mortgages by now.

Coming from outside Australia it's always seemed off how this one CEO's opinions are somehow newsworthy. Like if Frank Walker from National Tiles had a hot take on the economy would they write articles about it?

    • Fair comment.

Perhaps they would if Frank had lobbyists pushing an agenda to tile the highways, or pave National Parks down the halls of power, and was donating to the Laborals

      • Frank's only agena is deals on fabulous wall and floor tiiiles. This week only, in store and online. National Tiiiiles.

  • Poor Gerry Harvey… crying now…

  • I was earning $420 a week

    Is that full time?
Assuming that's after-tax, it's annual salary of $25,000. Isn't that less than minimum wage?

  • That article was a painful read - do they not have editors checking grammar and punctuation?

    • The media is as full of 'essential migrant workers' as every other sector. They just have to show up. Or WFH.Most of them couldn't get a birthday card message right. News.com.au, often has glaring spelling mistakes. What 'journalist' doesn't use hasn't got spell check, FFS.
Grammar (not grandma) and punctuation died years ago. As long as "junior" can plant an emoji, it's all fine & dandy.

As for editors, surely the owner of the piece would have an iota of personal pride in their work? (rhetorical)

  • Time for Gerry to go. Made the govt add a tax to benefit him, and now this short cut to bigger profits risks our national biosecurity.
