This is a much better deal IMO with 8 outlets and USB https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/814257

      Are those surge protected?

175J surge protection to help prevent damage to connected tools and appliances caused by inconsistencies in power supply

Why do people think that 175J is worth bothering about at all, vs a marketing ploy.

        • better than nothing and a bare minimum I guess.
I wouldn't use for super expensive gear.

The Jackson 4 Outlet Surge Protected Powerboard w/ separate switches are alright when WW has for half price (also 175J)

@G-rig: Their best Album was Victory (1985)

            • +1

              @davebelling: Jackson 4 haha.

Yep that was The Jacksons, one of the first CD I ever bought was Destiny I think.

Unless you're protecting small devices that don't store any important data, you'll want to avoid joule ratings under 1,000. However, a lower rating is sufficient if you're protecting things like blenders or table lamps.

          • +3

@RooAvery: Even then, light bulbs are cheap and (could be wrong on this one) diodes used in them are not particularly susceptible to surges.

The powerful AC motors on a blender is just going to shrug off anything that a tiny little protection device in a cheap powerbar would be capable of handling.

Just about all electronics I've opened up have capacitors at the DC input, presumably exactly to protect against voltage fluctuations.

I cannot think of a single instance where I would value a 175J protector on a powerbar more than just pure copper.

            • @rumblytangara: Just ignore it then if you're after a simple power board. Most people have insurance if something really shits itself.

      Its in stock for starters…..

175J surge protection isn’t that much, probably except lamps etc

    • What sort of level would you want for an expensive gaming pc?

I got some better boards but don't fit in my under desk tray so using a Belkin.
thought most units have a main circuit breaker anyway

      • I have a 2750J one by CyberPower.

  • +6

    need individual switches.

  • +16

Surge protection? I just want it cause its long and black.

    • +2

Still you would need the protection from being overheated.

  • Are there any 2 outlet boards with surge protection? Bonus if there's individual switches, i haven't found any yet

    • What’s wrong with more outlets?

      • +1

        Size.

        • try HPM D2PA/2WE

  • not a field I'd expected to have so much variations, whats the difference between these 10-20 surge protectors and a Belkin which goes from 40-60 buckaroos

or wouldnt it better to have some kind of 'pure' surge protector between the power outlet and any powerboard,

Im sure it would exist cant think of what it wou ld be called though

    • +1

Belkin ones are around 900J, there is simply no comparison. Just buy this if you just want a cheap board, there is not much "protection" here.

    • +1

I believe that the Belkin come with connected equipment warranty.

  • The packet for the ‘surge protected’ is identical to the standard 6 outlet sold by Amazon au.
Could this be a fake rrp?

    • +1

I had to check my old order. R105 = no surge protection. R105PA = surge protection

  • +4

I have two of these power boards, and the 0.9m lead length is quite inconvenient when I'm using them.

    • how is the overall build quality. tempted to get for the surge protection as i need to upgrade from the 4 point i have currently. thanks

      • +5

Theres basically no surge protection on these (175J), only buy it for the outlets.

    • +2

Agreed… all these cheap powerboards come with 90cm leads, which really makes them pretty useless a lot of the time. The 1.8m ones really seem to jump up in price, for a tiny increase in materials cost.

    • 100% agree, how much extra would it cost to make it 2 metres.

    • You da real MVP

  • Thanks OP

4 Outlet Surge Protected is still $11.98

    now $9.86

  • Can these be had without the 0.9m lead?

  • +3

Any reason low profile/side entry plugs always positioned at 135°? Why can't they be 180° vertical down?

  • -1

I'd be very wary of buying cheap powerboards. Consider the cost of what you are plugging into them then buy a Belkin.

    • Yeah the Belkin are good, get what you pay for. Have to try and get them on special which isn't often. Got one or two of those good government issued ones a ages ago (with master-slave outlets), and a few CyberPower ones that are good and high surge rating (no doubt people will knock em but never had any issues).

    • It's copper conductor. If you're worried you can open up a board and just look inside. As long as the gauge is correct for the current, there's really no whizz bang magic that goes on in these things. I've seen some really dodgy stuff, but that was in Asia bought at basically street stalls.

I would 100% not buy Belkin at normal retail prices. I regard those as just as much a marketing exercise as the hundred joule 'surge protected' boards, but in the opposite direction (far, far too much money for a function that you will probably never need). If I was that worried about specific pieces of high value gear, that's what either UPSes or data backups are for.

      • It's normal in Thailand to get a spark/zap plugging anything in haha.

        • You should see the cheapest stuff out of Mainland China. Found stuff where the ground wire is just the plastic sheath and no copper, held in place with hot glue.

The tiny Oz market with the Oz plugs that exist nowhere else in the world seems to mean we either get cheap crud with laughable surge protection stickers to help sell it, or horribly overpriced Belkin stuff. Not much in the middle.

          • @rumblytangara: yeah shame no trade-quality stuff for affordable prices. HPM seems like a decent brand in general, but agree that most stuff isn't cheap down-under.

  • It's now $21.56..
