(Somewhat belated) freebie game discovery:

I only recently found out that this indie RTS game - Subpar Commander (from the same developer of recently released Zortch) - was originally published on itch.io in 2017 and had a sale price at one point … and then afterwards, the game was made completely freeware in April 2023.

Game Description:

Four brain-in-a-jar based commanders are buried in various places in the world

Three of them goes crazy and it's up to Red to stop them

Pretty much your standard RTS

(but with less unit types and more insanity)

System Requirements: Windows XP at least ( tested on 7, 8 and 10)

Update:

Patch v1.01 - Performance improvements

Patch v1.02 - Improved zoom, various fixes

Patch v1.03 - Various fixes and gameplay tweaks

Patch v.104 - Window related fixes

        It's a real shame that supreme commander is probably one of the only actual strategy rts games (as opposed to tactics and micro focused rts). That scale was epic. Can't believe people actually want micro.

            @Nukkels: god wing commander 3 was great (at least it was from what I can remember playing it as a 10 year old with no real frame of reference for any other flying game)
