When to Resign?

Hi guys,

I have accepted a new job offer, that started from 8th of January. I am required to give my current employer 3 weeks of notice. Last week of December and first week of January, most of the staff are on forced annual leave while I will still be working. Since a lot of public holidays coming, when would be the best time to resign?

My new job also requires me to complete fit2work checks, which I have submitted and they are in pending state. It requires international police check + employment reference checks etc, not sure how long it will take but I have accepted the job offer agreement, which is conditional.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks!

Sounds like you need to resign 3 weeks before starting your new job.

Public holidays etc have nothing to do with it really.

  • Date to resign = 8th of January, less 21 days.

… just before COB on 15-Dec, so you can finish on 5-Jan

Forced annual leave is your employers problem, resign on the 15th if you want to. 3 weeks is 3 weeks.

If you resign tomorrow they could tell you to leave and pay out those 3 weeks. If you want to ensure you don't miss any pay, resign Friday next week. If you want to give them the most notice you can and not burn bridges (because good luck finding a replacement by Jan 8th) tell them straight away. They could also be bastards, turn around and tell you to show up over the xmas period (except the public holidays). It depends on your job and the company.

Fit2Work, do you have any concerns? From what I know Fit2Work are shutting down Dec 22nd for the xmas period. But if you've actually done the medicals the results will be back by then, if there's still pending medical checks to be done it'll be hard to finalise everything.

International police check won't be finished until next year anyway if they're just submitting them now, so either way you can't wait for that. I've never seen a contract pending reference checks but that's unlikely to sink your job unless you blew up your old company or something. Your criminal record is on you and a discussion to have with them - if you're in the clear then you're all good.

    • I guess, I will ask my future company whether they will still take me if the checks are not completed by 8th Jan. I am not worried about the checks but I am worried that they might be delayed as I have read threads of employment checks being delay for more than 20 working days.

      Thanks for your insight.

      • Yeah, I'd ask. Highly doubt medicals and ref checks wouldn't be done before you start (with Fit2Work our biggest problem is getting the actual medicals done, not the results). Our reference/background check provider is even running a skeleton staff over the christmas period to keep things humming along. International checks are absurd though, depends on where you have lived. I've never seen a job start date change due to not having an international police check not finished though.

But if they signed a contract on the 8th, they're taking the risk to speed things up. Where I work we don't offer until the checks are done and wear the results. Unless it's a really small company that might try wrangle a new date you're fine, a big one will just wear the cost if they decide there is a risk putting you on site and just pay from day one anyway.

  • People who have invested time in interview, offer letter and then waiting for 21 days won't cancel your offer letter if you need a week here and there.(hiring new one will take longer) so tell them that you want to wait till all checks are cleared to mitigate any risk. They will understand. (My employer did)

  • Call in sick every morning from next Monday. Enjoy your last 3 days at work this week. Enjoy your month off before starting work in the new year. Congratulations on your new role.

Yesterday. As above, don't burn bridges.
And does it matter if you finish on 5th and have a week off whilst waiting for checks to finish?

I wouldn't quit until all the background/fit checks are complete so you 100% the job is yours.

This! if the job is not 100% yours and ALL hoops are jumped through, it's not yet 'your job'.

  • How much leave do you have?
Apply for 4 weeks leave from 1st of January, then put your notice in on the 7th of January.

  • 3 weeks that gives you end date of Jan 1st. You get paid for all the holidays. Not exact science.

If anyone else is asking the next best time to quite is Easter. One you get 2 days and also your colleagues have to pick up your work during school holidays.

  • 22nd December is your 3 weeks notice.

Holidays or not, that doesn't come into the equation ever. Someone can put their resignation throughout the Easter public holidays, but not expected to add 2 more days because of the 2 days public holidays.

Hopefully your background checks are clear on or before 22nd Dec

  • Just got an email from fit2work that my prospective employer has advised them to contact my current employer for verification purposes. Idk why. Now I am forced to provide consent to let them contact my current employer :/

  • If the job offer is conditional on the checks then I'd wait until the checks come back. Then advise the new employer you will start 3 weeks after that. Then submit notice via email and a call to your supervisor - even if they are on holidays.

  • When to Resign?

When it’s cast iron certain that you have the next job
