Concrete Paint Suggestions for Tiles around Pool, Slip and Heat Resistant

We have concrete tiles around our pool. They are old, super rough and abrasive and get extremely hot. It’s not nice to lean on the edge of the pool and my kids fingers are getting abrasions when holding on to the edge. I’m wondering if anyone could suggest a concrete paint that is both slip resistant (due to being next to pool) and won’t get as hot. I know to go for lighter colours.

I did a search and found this https://www.wallmasterpaints.com.au/products/copy-of-energy-star-cool-pave-low-sheen#:~:text=Energy%20Star®%20coatings%20are,reduce%20absorbed%20heat%20in%20concrete. but wasn’t sure if paints like this made the surface cooler to touch or just the general area around it.

I had a bit of a look at the Dulux products too but it’s hard to tell what the result will be like.

Apologies for the niche question but perhaps someone has gone through similar and have some suggestions.

I used the Dulux products recently and the finished job looks good. We went with a dark colour as the patio is undercover.

I used a cheap roller from Bunnings (about $14 with the pole) and it help give a slightly textured finish which is great for slip resistance. The previous job had probably been sprayed on and was very smooth. It was dangerous in the wet.

The Dulux videos suggest that it will need redoing every 2-3 years.

About 80 sqm and the paint and equipment cost around $700.

Our actual pool is pebblecrete so it doesn't have the issues you mention.

    • Would you mind sharing photos of how its come up? and specifically, what Dulux products you used?

We have existing concrete pavers that have been painted around our pool. Coping is quite rough and abrasive as per OPs, and the paint is quite worn and looking drab.I'm thinking a really solid clean up, scratch up so the paint adheres will refresh the area and maybe coat in some of the really rough abrasiveness, rather than ripping up all the paving (only to replace it with something.. $$$).

I'm wondering how it would come up painted.

      • This video is exactly what I did. Heck, even my watering can was the same.

My work was on solid laid concrete, but we also have an old concrete sink outside and I freshened up the inside with the concrete paint - same series of steps.

We went with a dark colour (Oolong) because the patio is undercover and it contrasts well with the house. The pool is light (pebbelcrete) and we have light coloured stones (salt & pepper) on one side, pebblecrete paving on the entrance side, and grass/garden for the rest.

Just note that the primer is only usable for 3 days from when you open/mix it so have that part worked out in advance if doing lots of small jobs.

  • I used Berger non-slip paint to paint my pool coping 1.5 years ago and it's holding up great: https://www.berger.com.au/product-selector/product-detail/be…
