OzBargainers' "Game of the Year" for 2023

Consider Game of the Year award is streaming in 2 days, I thought it would be interesting to ask the ozbargainers, what is your "Game of the Year" for 2023. Lots of interesting titles from big studios this year, and I am picking the 6 nominees from GOTY nominees as the initial poll options. However if you have other suggestions, please leave it in the Suggestion box in the comment post, so that it can be added to the poll.

Please note that

  • Game must be released in 2023
  • Full game only, not DLCs

Poll Options expired

This is part of What Should I Buy poll for 2023. Check out other recommendations from the OzBargain community.

    Suggested Lies of P

Lies Of P, never played a Souls game. First game all year that I could not put down. I hated it so much, made me rage so much that I loved it!

    • +2

I heard that it's harder than Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I don't hate myself enough to want to pick it up.

      • +1

You'll be right at home if you've enjoyed Bloodborne. About the same wavelength.

      • The final boss was a nightmare.. probably died about 40-50 times. Other than that it was ok.

    • I had never heard of Lies of P and loved Elden Ring, thanks for pointing me to this, now on the backlog

  • Why are we at Baldurs Gate 2 and not 3 lol

    • PEBCAK during cut and paste. My bad.

    Suggested Hi-Fi Rush

    Hi-Fi Rush

No option for Starfield. Oh wait, this isn't most underwhelming game of the year…

    Suggested Final Fantasy XVI

    Final Fantasy XVI

  • BG3 will steal all awards this year

  • GTA6 obliviously

  • +1
    Suggested Lethal Company

    Early access though

  • Alan Wake 2. Incredible game. I really want it to win GOTY at The Game Awards but BG3 will probably win it. In my opinion, it's the only game on the list that does something completely different and unique. Every other game on this list is incredible but none of them do anything new that hasn't been done before.
This is probably my second favourite game of all time after TW3.

    • I have such fond memories of the first one, i was debating which game to get between starfield, bg3 and this. Ended up picking starfield and was disappointed, then went to bg3 and there just isn't enough time in life to get through it, wish I picked up Alan Wake 2 first.

Only new release I played this year was Zelda. So I guess it gets my vote by default

  • Definitely think Phantom Liberty deserves to be an option.

  • +2

    Minesweeper without a doubt.

  • Battlebit Remastered is the only release from 2023 that I consistently play. So, by default gets my vote.

  • Suggested Starfield

Starfield - Oh come on - it was so engaging!

    Suggested Hogwarts Legacy

Great combat, not a bad story, beautiful and always fun to enter the Wizarding World.

    • +1

I gave it a crack and enjoyed it, agree it's beautiful and Harry Potter fans would add a couple of points but it felt repetitive and a shallow after a while. Similar to Starfield, spend so much time getting to things.

  • If this wasn't the one and only Scotty's poll, I would have added "slagging on JV" as a game option..

  • -1

Would the revamped Cyberpunk 2077 2.1 update and the recent Phantom Liberty expansion make the cut? I've been having a great time playing C2077.

    • +3

Usually GOTY nominees are full game released on that year — DLCs or extension packs don't count.

    Suggested Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

If you are fan of SW games/movies…

  • +1

    Zelda Zelda Zelda
    (Haven't played BG3 yet.. apparently it's amazing)

  • +2

    Civilisation 4

  • -1

What, No Destiny 2 - The Witch Queen? Oh, for sure Game of the Year!

    • +1

Destiny 2 was a game released in 2017, The Witch Queen was an expansion released in 2022.

  • +1

I played Zelda, didn't enjoy it as much as BOTW.
Whereas I haven't played any turn based RPG ever, because whenever I've tried I haven't enjoyed them. But BG3? Lost like 50-60 hours to it.

  • Congratulations to Baldur's Gate III for winning the GOTY at The Game Awards!

    • However according to the OzBargainers, there are more going for the Zelda than BG3 (even though it's a Nintendo-exclusive game that I might never be able to play).

      • OzBarg is a more Nintendo centric site.

It sucks that with these polls, you only get one option.

Games like high fi rush are not going to compete with buldars game 3 and totk, but it's definitely a must buy whenever you can have luxury money to.

  • Damn, the only game I played on that list was Snorefield. But I'm not voting for it.

    Suggested Octopath Traveller 2

    Octopath Traveller 2

Never played the first. Never gotten a couple of hours into a JRPG. Forget genre, this game is crazy good and phenomenally creative in every facet. This is like discovering gaming all over again, my mind was blown by SM64 and OoT in the late nineties, I had to wait 25 years to experience the same feeling again.

I also loved TOTK, and Wonder, and RE4, and Pikmin 4 this year.

  • Suggested Street Fighter VI

It's a shame not to see really great fighters be contender for the game of the Year award.
Anyway mines between sea of stars and street fighter vi..
    I can't nominate a second can I.

    • You can nominate multiple — just post multiple comments with different suggestions. However you can only vote for one. The poll ends today anyway.

      • Thanks. Will know for next time :) I was contemplating to do that but wasn't sure if that was ok'd having 2 nominations.
