Coles 10%+ Price Increase on All Items via DoorDash

Coles on DoorDash (and UberEats) have price matched in store pricing for a while. Well, this is now a thing of the past. I'm now seeing a 10%+ premium applied to all items and weekly catalogue specials are no longer applied. Is everyone else seeing this?

The price increase appears for both the "Coles" and "Coles Local" stores.

We had the delivery minimum increase to $35 not that long ago as well. I could live with that, but not a surcharge on items and no weekly specials.

    "Oh noes!!"… Anyway…

Who would have thought that a company would want to cover the costs of delivering to people. And 10% on your $35 order would make it $38.50. Is $3.50 some how excessive to have someone pick your items, put them into a crate, take it to the dock, load it onto a truck, have the driver drive to your premises, get out of their truck, unlaod your order from the truck, walk it up to your door and help you unload it? 10% is too much?

We had the delivery minimum increase to $35 not that long ago

And this is to stop people getting lazy and ordering a can of Coke and a frozen meal that costs more to deliver than what it would cost to buy.

    • Both DoorDash and UberEats have been promoting their platforms for grocery shopping for a while, so I don't quite buy the argument the cost of the driver picking and delivering the items wasn't already factored in. And this is quite different to the delivery service from the grocer which seems to be what your describing.

For the minimum delivery, again there is the small order fee which is supposed to deter the lazy people you describe.

      • +11

The picking and delivery costs have been factored in and the end result is a loss but the loss is necessary to build up a customer base. Now that the customer base is there it's time to raise prices to turn that loss into a profit.

        • +2

          AKA enshittification

    • -1

      Is $3.50 some how excessive

      Yes, yes it is.

    • +4

There's actually already a 10% service fee in place. So it's another 10% on top of that, which makes it a total 21%.

    • +1

Mate its not just 10%. as an example i just bought 2 x 1.25lt bottles of coke, for $3.91

i just checked, current in store price is 1.70.

      thats approx a 230% increase.

if it was 10% on in store prices i could live with that but this is highway robbery.

and also don't forget that there is already an existing 10% service charge.

its not like they dont have a method of keeping current in store prices and specials accurate and adding 10%… theyve been doing matching prices accurately for the past year.

      • -1

Pretty sure 1.70is for 1 bottle so your two bottles is 3.40 . So a 51c increase not 230%

        • +1

3.91 is the price of 1 bottle on DoorDash.

        • nope, 3.91 for ONE BOTTLE

    • Exactly!

    • I mean, it's a good way to lose the business again if that was the goal. The 10% (on top of already 10% loading from doordash) is bad enough but at least understandable, but the lack of instore specials is a nonstarter. Assuming you actively target specials (like the vast majority of people do when they go grocery shopping), you're probably paying another 25% or more on your total shop along with the 20% loading now, and nobody is going to pay that; or at least, they shouldn't.

As a simple example, if you buy a 24 or 30pack of coke varieties at full price ever, you are massively overspending. Previous pricing on these was either ~$24 or ~$30 on the packs on a weekly rotation, meaning one or the other is always on sale. Now that instore specials are not applied to doordash, you pay $40 on a 24 pack and $50 on a 30 pack. If these were part of your regular shop, they now functionally cost 66% more online before either 10% loading is applied.

If they don't want the business and they weren't making money I get it, but buying online from Coles now is just stupid. I used to do a regular shop through door dash and now I spend functionally nothing at Coles.

Yes the same goes for Uber Eats…sucks

    • Has Woolworth's done the same on Uber Eats? I know their Metro60 stores are on Uber Eats.

  • I was gonna come and make this post. Coles actually increased the prices of all items TWICE today actually.

This morning (Around 2-3AM) I was going through the Store on DoorDash and was gonna add their Pasta Salad to my order and it showed as $7 which was $6 for months then I went and checked again about an hour ago and saw it increase to $7.70 so 2 price increases in several hours.

They didn't even bother to change the prices of certain items to this weeks specials which they usually do. I have been waiting a long time for their Fantastic Noodles to go back to 95 cents which is the price it's currently at since it's on special and instead it's showing as $2.15 on DoorDash.

    Coles the Price Gouging dogs.

Also side note: Don't ever order Spam from Coles Express or any food products for that matter as I think these stores sell expired food at twice the price! I ordered 2 spam cans from my local Coles Express store near me and they were both expired. One from 2021 and the other from 2022. I almost got sick from the 2021 one because I opened it and had a tiny bit of it without checking the date so just a fair warning to anyone that orders from Coles Express…

    • +1

I buy those 800g salads as well. I've seen the price switch between $6 and $7 before on DoorDash, but your right they have been hovering at $6 for a while. The Coles Kitchen Classic Veggie Pasta Salad (700 g) didn't price change which was interesting.

I don't see any specials reflected in DoorDash pricing now :(.

      • +1

That senate hearing could not happen any time soon… Tho I already know nothing is gonna happen from it. The CEO's will bullshit their way through that hearing and continue raising the prices of everything even after it. We need a royal commission! They can't keep getting away with this.

I have a 10% off and free delivery when spend >$15 for groceries on Doordash, but I'm having problems finding anything that's not a ripoff on Coles to reach $15…without matching the standard catalogue specials, I won't be doing groceries shopping via delivery anymore.

    • $4.40 for Arnott's Chicken Crimpy Shapes (175 g), it's like an insult now!

    • +1

same. Even with 10% off, the items I need still more expensive than instore

  • On a side note, I noticed that the price of 3L milk at Coles went up from $4.50 to $4.80 for a few weeks. When no one else followed, they seemed to have brought it back down to $4.50 this week. I guess $1.1billion dollars in 2023 wasn't enough?

    • $4.95 today

  • Hmm since you can now leave notes on substitute items I wonder if the Dasher would throw in extra items into the order? Like for example I want Fantastic Noodles which are on special at 95 cents each and they are priced at $2.15 on DoorDash I wonder if I could type something like

"Hey can you please throw in 2 for the price of $2.15? since they are actually on special at 95 cents each but not showing that price on DoorDash"

I would probably give the Dasher a huge tip if he/she actually reads the notes on the items and goes through with it. I'm gonna try this the next time I make an order because if this works you ain't letting Coles get away with this bullshit.

I even notice the Dasher leaves the receipt in my orders too so it should even come up as 95 cents on it.
You could also get in contact with DoorDash and show proof on the receipt and get refunded on the difference I reckon.

    • I think the drivers pay by a card that has a set payment authorisation limit based on the order, but I could be wrong.

I used the notes to specify the expiry date needed to be > 2 days (veggie and milk stuff) on several items, otherwise don't buy it and I get the refund. The driver ignored the notes or didn't read it and bought the items as-is anyway. I had a large baby spinach packet with same day expiry :(.

I have also tipped the driver on $50+ grocery orders and the driver never said anything. I don't even know if they look at this stuff or care.

      • +3

This is correct. I’ve been doing UberEats and Doordash for years. Only do Coles through UberEats though. Store price doesn’t matter, we can only scan and add the quantity listed on the order. Then check out and pay with the Uber card in my Apple Pay wallet which is preauthorised to a value slightly above what the order should cost.

Regarding tips, they don’t always come through straight away and I’ve had occasions where I don’t even receive a notification of a tip.

Guess the grocery shop orders will slow down now. They were my preference as they pay the best.

        • Thanks for clarifying and thank you for your service :p.

A question on notes that can be added on an item (at least on DoorDash, not sure about UberEats), is this something you read when picking the item? For example I've mentioned in the notes not to buy the item if the expiry date is less then 2 days but I haven't seen this reflected. Not a huge issue, was just curious about how prominent the notes are made to the driver and is there anything you would look for or just ignore. I would at least try to keep the notes brief.

And if I may, the shopping in progress step of the order - I presume you can activate this at any time in the app? I've seen a few times where the order status will show shopping in progress when the driver was near to the merchant address but then they clearly went off and did another delivery somewhere else before actually picking my order.

You're paying for the convenience of someone to go shopping for you. Why do you expect it to be the same price as you doing it yourself?

    • +1

Woolworth's same day delivery service doesn't have items jacked up as Woolworth's advertises in-store prices on their website and even someone just like DoorDash goes to the store and does the shopping for you and all you pay is $15 for same day delivery. The same is probably applied to their Metro60 stores on Uber Eats.

Coles is just looking for more ways to continue jacking up their prices so people go hungry as fast as possible.

They couldn't just wait till next year to apply this 10%… Doing it in December when Christmas is close is just a dick move on their end.

      • +1

I agree the timing was crap. Another kick to the nuts.

Same day scheduled delivery directly with Coles was $11 for me when I checked this morning for $50 minimum spend. I can't see myself using Coles via DoorDash now unless I'm desperate or there is a decent promo code.

        • Yeah good luck getting any promo codes for Coles there's barely been any these past several months… for current members anyway always PLENTY for new users tho which is what you said "Kick in the nuts" for current members and even when one does eventually show up it's TARGETED which is also a kick in the nuts… I haven't had a Coles promo in months no joke and when I do see some get posted on here it's Targeted so I check my email and nothing…

What I hate tho is when they raised it to $35 minimum price. I'm a Dashpass member so I don't have to worry about the Delivery fee the only thing I hate tho is I have to make my orders $35… If it's less I'll be slapped with Service fee / Delivery fee / Small order fee and who knows what else these days.

Another thing I hate is I like to tip the drivers but thanks to DoorDash with their [BEEP]ing Service Fee I can't tip drivers but I do try. I'd love to give them more than $10 tip but the best I can do is around $5-$7.50 because of the service fee… Thanks DoorDash.

          • +1

@RocketToSpace: Agree on the promo's. I haven't seen one applicable for Coles since signing up for Dashpass.

You can easily cheese the small order minimum if you want. I mean, it isn't my fault if a merchant doesn't delist an item if its out of stock. My local Coles has a number of items that are never in stock so add a few of these with a refund preference if out of stock and you can pad out your cart. Of course I'll only choose something that I may want if it was actually in stock, but it hasn't happened yet :p.

An option to tip at the time of checkout would be nice. I would have thought a driver would want to know if an order has an included tip, particularly when tipping isn't the norm here. At least it may give them a brief smile as they handle your food haha.

        • -3

I agree the timing was crap. Another kick to the nuts.

LOL Come one…. A kick in the nuts? Pull the other one. My heart goes out for you, as you now have to go out and get food yourself instead of having a slave do it for you as you don't want to pay the increased prices of 'convenience'.

          • @JimmyF: Delivery drivers are a slave? It is their job. They've chosen the work they want to do. Give me a break with this slave nonesense.

It's a little short sighted to think that everyone can simply go out and get the things they want whenever they want. Not everyone is in the same situation as you and these services cater to a broad customer base.

Also, the price increase was set by Coles, not DoorDash.

Merchant sets prices that are higher than in-store prices for this location. In-store promotions may not apply.

There is no difference to a delivery driver walking into a Coles vs any other customer. So yes, it is a kick in the nuts to disadvantage a service at this time of the year when there is no difference to the merchant.

            • @spaceinvader2054:

Delivery drivers are a slave? It is their job.

Yes, It is their job, but you want to them work for slave money.

They've chosen the work they want to do. Give me a break with this slave nonesense.

They have, but yet you don't want to pay any extra for their time. So the nonsense is you thinking $15 should cover their time to pick the goods off the shelf, scan them and drive to your door to deliver them, all at the same prices if you did it yourself.

Which you don't want to, hence why you are so outraged that your $15 shopping slave has gone away.

It's a little short sighted to think that everyone can simply go out and get the things they want whenever they want.

Oddly that is how the world has worked for millions of years. If you can't go get it yourself, you have to GASP pay for the 'convenience' of someone else doing it.

Also, the price increase was set by Coles, not DoorDash.

DoorDash takes a cut of the order to cover costs, the price increase is to offset those costs. The honeymoon time is over.

So yes, it is a kick in the nuts to disadvantage a service at this time of the year when there is no difference to the merchant.

Then do it yourself and pocket the savings and stop complaining about it.

You seem to think you are entitled to this, you're not.

      • -1

Woolworth's same day delivery service doesn't have items jacked up

        Yet….

DoorDash goes to the store and does the shopping for you and all you pay is $15 for same day delivery

So you think $15 is a fair price to cover the doordash wages to do your shopping for you?

Coles is just looking for more ways to continue jacking up their prices so people go hungry as fast as possible.

I think it will be more to recover the cost of these services, just like Uber takes a 30-35% cut from Ubereats orders + delivery fee + service fee. The same is happening here.

Who is going hungry? The stores are open, you can walk in yourself and shop at the cheaper prices.

Doing it in December when Christmas is close is just a dick move on their end.

Don't disagree, but you know, it was going to happen. Go shopping yourself if you don't like it.

  • I have noticed today Uber eats coles prices have increased since yesterday. Most items average 2-4$ more.

I could have supported a service fee or small order fee increase. A blanket 10% surcharge which compounds the service fee, and no specials pricing, is pricing out this option for me. Given Coles sets the item pricing you have to wonder if they want to push customers onto their own delivery platforms. If this was the case it may have worked on me.

  • There are two types of food delivery. Premium/ultra convenience and standard/regular convenience.
    Doordash v regular coles/woolies delivery

For the same reason you pay more for a coke at 7/11 you'll pay more for everything via Uber and doordash. You pay for the premium service of ultra convenience.

The most surprising thing is that this is surprising to anyone.

It's also the end of the service honeymoon period. They cost in discounts for x months or years at the start. That's ended now.

No it's not a surprise but doesn't mean we can't have a whinge about it!

Doritos Cheese Supreme Corn Chips Sharepack | 380g
Coles: 6.00 "down down price" / DoorDash 9.35 (55.8% more + service fee)

      • I've seen quite a few > 10% surchages now as well with some exceeding 7-eleven prices. I guess this is one way to price out your customer.

  • Problem with ordering online you often miss out on looking at other items that may be cheaper. I've tried online supermarket shopping but found browsing less user friendly and the ability to compare similar items (price/content) not as easy as in person.

    • Doordash had Coles prices for a fairly long time, this just happened less than 2 weeks ago.

  • +1

Has anyone managed to get in contact with Coles over this? I'm itching to hear the real reason behind this increase.

    • I messaged them over on Facebook and received this reply.

Hi Charbel, thanks for reaching out. We have made a decision to adjust the price of products available through on-demand delivery platforms Uber Eats and DoorDash. This change reflects the convenience these services offer, allowing our customers in predominantly metro areas to order last minute groceries and have them delivered in a short time frame. These on-demand partner delivery services complement our Coles Online services which offer the same in-store pricing as our supermarkets. Coles Online offers include free Click&Collect for orders over $50, free delivery for orders over $250, $2 mid-week delivery (available Tuesday-Thursday) and customers in selected locations can also access Coles Rapid delivery service for $15 with a minimum spend of $30 to purchase products at the same price as our supermarkets. We hope this info helps.

  • +2

No point in doing grocery shopping on doordash any more if they don't match store prices (specials and retail). If you live in a major city, there is a coles within a 5 min drive for most people.

  • -5

Everyone whinging about costs of delivery so you can sit at home getting fat being lazy. Go and do your own shopping or shut up whinging.

  • +1

I was a bit caught off guard by this, purchasing $300 at 15% off to fund an account that had some offers.

I'll still end out ahead but not going to be buying anymore gift cards I think.

  • If they up the price by 12% then I still see nothing wrong with using DD/UE for grocery shopping. Yes, you are going to pay a bit more but why on earth would I want to spend my weekends in a colesworth shopping? It does, however, make online Colesworth more attractive but you need to plan ahead and sometimes I just cbf doing that. I never use DD/UE for takeaway because prices are jacked 30% which makes Colesworth price jacking look tame.

    • I use discounted UE/DD when they are 10% to 15% or whatever. If I can't get them on discount then definitely not using Colesworth. So, nothing wrong with still using Colesworth but only with discounted giftcards.
