What were the circumstances and what did you say?

You could try: "Please, please, please, please, please, please, pretty please"…

Yes, called them up and asked. The operator reviewed the application, asked me more detailed questions about my income and expenses and then "reassessed" which resulted in a positive outcome.

There isn't a magic combination of words

"My application has been approved" jedi style hand wave

Rang them and they raised some questions which I had already covered in my application. I politely suggested they read the documents already sent. They did and it was approved.

I did once with Westpac. Was provisionally approved, then declined. Call to ask why. They said your super amount is not shown on your payslip, therefore declined (??). Had a letter from HR done up confirming full wage incl super, sent through, got it approved.

I have a story where its close to this.

I applied for a St George CC.

I answered everything truthfully, and they needed more info. No worries provided it.

Then I got a call to discuss my application, they said I stated my monthly balance on my other CC was $X,000 and my monthly repayment was exactly the same $X,000. I said yes because I pay it off at month end without fail.

They said that based on that I would be rejected.

They then said I should put down the calculated MINIMUM repayment required per my statement which was something RIDICULOUSLY low like $100 NOWHERE near commensurate with the actual balance.

I amended my repayment to $100 and was immediately approved.

So the bank won't extend me credit if I repay the balance but WILL give me credit where I fall behand by thousands per month and will be in default within 3 months???

That's why I put in the application about other cards: credit card limit $25k, owned 0. My card is set to auto payment and paid in full each month.

yeh i always say 0 owing

if you pay it in full every month, you should put 0

    • They're asking for your minimum required payment. Standard lending requirement.

Christ, you guys are getting rejected? I have banks calling me and emails from my banks begging for me to take up a credit card… I wish they would leave me alone.

Are you sure they're allowed to do that? I thought those days are long gone after the Banking Royal Commission back in 2018.

  • IMHO Don't bother, their algorithm is their own. There's plenty of offers out there.

I hope you’re not planning on taking a loan anytime soon

    • scare tactics, give me some evidence that it will affect a loan. My credit score is way higher after having 5+ credit cards in the last year. No issues refinancing loan in last 12 months either.

If you can't service the loan and credit card you can cancel it prior to applying for the loan, within a month or so it will show as closed and not be an issue

Yes I have. Had an ANZ card app declined with no specific reasoning given. I called up and did not mention specifically that my application had been declined but asked if any additional information should be supplied for my application to be approved. I had closed a credit card I had open when I initially made my application and suggested I could send a closure notice. I supplied that document and then my initial application was reopened and approved.

I had HSBC decline an application as they had my old address on file and it was flagged as potential fraud. I appealed and it got approved.

Not in Australia, but I applied for a Chase credit card in the US. Initially, I received a decline. However, after calling their reconsideration line and answering some questions, I was immediately approved.

I had application declined from Bankwest, when I queried it seems I had submitted application twice, due to some quirk or error in the online form. Resubmitted and approved immediately. Not sure if this scenario is really what you are asking about.

I was declined by Kogan but they didn't want to play ball to reverse their decision

  • Yep, a couple of times. ANZ and HSBC

  • Interestingly enough, I asked for a reassessment and the application decision was changed to approved. Goes to show, dont take no for an answer!
